I'm having trouble getting the collection to work even with the mod manager's hints on load order :/

For load order, Mod Manager should let you know which mods need to be loaded before the others. However, the first few should be:

ModCheck
Core
HugsLib
JecsTools
RIMMSAssemble
Humanoid Alien Races

then use Mod Manager to check the remaining mods.
