I like it although its overkill xP

It's a 4-way stop - same as when you drive a car on the street and reach an intersection. It's useful in the early game when you can't afford more, want a very fast cross as there's generally not much traffic so it's usually green. All the more elaborate schemes assume heavy traffic and they introduce latency, which this minimizes assuming extremely light traffic.
