Oh, well thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.

No worries, sorry if I was a bit harsh in the correction! Burg and Beorg are similar words so I totally understand the choice and I could well be wrong on that point. And yes, there are a load of references to Burg so it'd be a pain to fix now.

Btw, really fun map! I had a great time with it; nice stuff! I'll keep an eye out for if you're working on any other maps.

It sounds like you are correct. I mistakenly went with 'burg' as I assumed it was the most common label since it has stuck to the Wikipedia article for so long. I'll keep that in mind in future, although I don't intend to go back and edit instances of 'burg' on this map. If I ever refine it, maybe I will. Thanks a lot for the correction.

I'll bear in mind (I have the same issue with my old maps, they always seem more flawed than when I made them). Still, I'm really excited by the screens you posted so I'm eager to give it a go! Looks like a nice map.

So translation: you're correct about Burg and Barrow, but not that they have similar meanings, and certainly not in the Old English. The place is "Wōdnesbeorġ". Burh translates to Burg, but the place is a "Beorg" not a "Burh". Burh is a fortified town (more or less - there's debate on this). The Bosworth-Toller dictionary lists Beorg as "a hill, mountain" or "a heap, barrow, place of burial".

If you have a look at Swanton or Whitelock's translations of the Chronicles they translate the entries for MS A and E both as the battle of "Woden's Barrow". It's only Wikipedia that calls it Woden's Burg, and I think that is incorrect.

I'm glad you're interested, however, I would mention that I now view this map as fairly flawed. Burg and barrow are both English words as I understand it, so if I'm not mistaken, both translations are correct.

This looks really interesting, so I'm keen to have a go. Just briefly though, isn't this the battle of Woden's Barrow? Just a quick question - why has Beorg been translated as Burg?

Ha! I'm glad to hear it. Thanks alot for your kind words. Yes it's possible that I featured settlements which were not particularly notable at the time. Hastings is certainly one, but I think it serves as a good place which most players can relate to, as most people have heard of the famous battle many centuries later. I am also from the north of England, you see, so in truth my knowledge of the towns of the south, particularly at other points in history, is not incredibly sharp. I do deeply enjoy the history though. In any case, those are some very relevant criticisms and I thank you for your comment.

So I’ve played as every faction several times-this is one map you can play 100x!. What a thoughtful representation. Very immersive and challenging. I changed out the Vikings for celts as P3 but otherwise it’s an interesting set of matchups. One critique I have, since you spent obvious time on the setting, is that certain places like Axebridge are featured, which I’ve never read of existing as a notable settlement then, and Hastings, which MAY have been a small port, while omitting what I think are more obvious choices like Caerleon, Chester, etc. that would make play more strategic. I’ve edited paths thru the welsh mountains so enemies don’t bottleneck at aberystwyth. I say that only bc I see you put so much work into this already so it’s all love buddy thanks for your work it’s cost me a lot of down-time!

The Celt and Viking civs are both underutilized by many on here and I like seeing content made with them. That's all I'm gonna say.

Okay fair, I mean the game officially made Italian city states British, French and German..

DoomedPaul - I am very aware of the Celtic nature of Celtic people. However, you may have noticed that this is in fact a game, and civs are chosen for balance or gameplay reasons and not how well it fits the cultural bracket. Romans aren't Gothic Italians with Genoese crossbows, are they, but no one complains about making Roman civs Italians in maps with Rome, do they? Nor Western Rome being Teutons in the popular Romans vs Barbarians map. Vikings fit a tribal, dark age raiding civ very well. Longboats are also the perfect stand in unit for 'Currachs', small Irish raiding vessels of the dark age, and the Viking stronger infantry HP serves to make Irish warriors hardier and tougher, befitting of grizzled, toughened sea raiders.

Why are the Irish Vikings? They occupied a good portion of Ireland for a while 300 years later but the Irish are very Celtic.

This is some gooooood stuff... the map, the setting...
Love it that it has no countdown, makes it more tense in the late game, you have to pay attention to everybody's missions, need to be ready to call a truce at any moment, to stop the guy who is about to win...

This is a setting that deserves more focus and definitely lends itself well to a lot of interesting types of games. AWESOME idea. The evolution of Englaland etc is so fascinating. Thanks!

I have investigated and, as far as I am aware, solved the issue. Thanks for your kind words, and also for bringing such a major bug to my attention! Glad you like it.
mrk_ck 1 Jul, 2019 @ 10:00am
