@dsl! I think that's the point. The challenge. As for a slow accumulating of resources - are you in hurry to go somewhere? This game is no race and there is no reward for doing something fast or slow. Connect one sawmill, one coal mine and one toolworks, set the game to 4x speed and make a coffee. By the time you finish drinking, you'll have more than enough resources. :-)
@ds!! I think it all comes down to personal play style. For me I was always disappointed by the short distances the random generator creates and found it not very rewarding, so that's why I did it this way. If it really bothers you, you can just open the map in the editor and use the "Delete all Industries" button and let the game generate them randomly on game start, but that also removes for some bizarre reason all roads.
