@Happy Knight. Byzantium was a city in thrace (in the vicinity of Constantinople) that existed way before the rise of Rome.It is nowhere near etymologically connected to latin (Byzantion is greek or thracian in construction, and legend has it that it's named after King Byzas). Regardless the term Byzantine Empire only came into use way after the fall of Constantinople.

Well all i know is Byzantine is a near translation from Latin which means Eastern Rome (I study Latin and that's what i've been taught)

The thing with Russia being the third rome is a little bit more complex. We have to go quite deep into christianity here. In the book of Daniel (second chapter, part of the bible), Daniel has a dream which as seen as a prophecy: four great empires will come and when the last one falls, the apocalypse has come. This last empre was widely interpreted as the roman empire (translatio imperii). Both the HRE and the Byzantine Empire claimed to continue rome, so the apocalypse hadn't come since rome continued to live on. When the Byzantines fell in 1453, the Russians (i.e. the grand duchy of moscow) saw their chance to take on this prestigious title (successor of rome) and took up the flag (among others, but moscows claim was more widely accepted).
The lombards had nothing do to tih the HRE altogether.

Phew, there is quite a few to be set straight here.
First of all, the Eastern Roman Empire Never called themselves Byzantium (or Byzantine Empire). This term came up in the 19th/20th cenutry among historians to show that it was clearly different from what it had been in antiquity (f.ex. embracing greek culture). They called themselves romaion which is just the greek word for romans. So until the end in 1453, they saw themselves as the roman empire.
The conflict between the Holy Roman Empire and the Byzantines arose when Charlemagne was crowned not as a frankish king, but as a roman empreror (though it wasn't called that until the regency of Empreror Otto in the 10th century) by pope Leo III. The empreror in Constantinople saw himself as the only true roman empreror (because see above) and so the ground was laid for conflict for ages.

maybe if italie controls greece and turky they can call itself byzantium empire or eastern roman empire as a start to notice that the romans are on the rise again they first invaded greece.macedonie.albania... call itself the roman empire (SPQR) if they conquer the former western roman empire regions... maybe you can add region rome ass a independent state called SPQR??? after all.. every army of rome passed trough that region was considered as a traitor to rome....put civil war in the nation...put options for greece to start byzantium empire or eastern roman empire and/or to seek reunification with rome(italy) there culture was not very different from eachother...give greece option to do it on its own to create the former roman empire starting ass eastern roman empire (after conquerd macedonia,albania,turky) and later roman empire (after conquerd italy,africa??)...might be fun.

as far as i know from historiebooks is that the eastern roman empire call itself bijzantium because the pope had considered that the lombard would be the new roman empire called the holy roman empire so they called themself byzantium to distinguis themselfs ..(later it was the germans..franks called holy roman empire??) off course the eastern romans was not happy about that....and with russia the new rome i thougt it had to do with the orthodox cristianity because the cristian religion played a heavy rol within the empire and the separation between the empire also because the pope had declared itself as first persoon with trough god speaks???(well i cant read it anywhere in the bibel about that) with heavy complaines from the orthodox cristianity...ect.ect..
i think that italy would call itself roman republic..roman kingdom.. or just roman empire..maybe SPQR.. but was more related to city of rome

We gayreeks called ourselves Romans up to like 1880, so Byzantium technically both was and wasn't Rome. Greek Romios/"Ρωμιός" came from the word "Ρώμη" which means strength, whereas "Roman" as in Roman roman came from the city of Rome. Overall, the two empires had different culture, different religion, different ethnicity, but same identity and same origin.

Byzantion/Byzantium was just the colony that would become constantinople. That's the reason it's referred to by that by some historians.

Actually though, it was only called Byzantium after it fell, it was just East Rome. They did it to Disconnect Russia (The 'Third' Rome) from the Roman Empire which they claimed that they were the succesor of.

@Views, it may have never been called the Byzantine Empire while it was still on the map, it doesn't change the fact that the Byzantine Empire is still a valid name for it. And why would it form the Byzantine Empire? Well then it could claim to have finished half of the job of reforming the Roman Empire. Also because Constantinople is the second ROME. And if I was in control of what constituted the Eastern half of my nation's cultural Mega Empire, which had also went on to last an additional millenium after the fall of the Western half, I'd love to cash in on some of that prestige. What's a bigger rallying call then actually becoming one half of the Roman Empire?

The "Byzantine Empire" never existed, it was actually called throughout its existence The Eastern Roman Empire or just the Roman Empire, but still Italy lies in the western part of the empire so why it would form the eastern part? Even if in-game Italy owned the east they would still just form the Roman Empire.

@j a c c, there isn't a suggestion thread, so I'll put it in the comment section, I see that you obviously don't agree that Italy shouldn't be able to form the Byzantine Empire, despite "Byzantine Empire" literally meaning Eastern Roman Empire.

Can you make it so that Italy can form Byzantium? While it is true that Italy wanted to form THE Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire is just the Eastern Half of THE Roman Empire, so besides balance, there's not much reason for Italy not being able to form the Eastern Roman Empire.

Make the King of Greece replace Metaxes? Metaxes was the head of government, but the head of state was the King. Just an idea.
