@ApollonDriver, check out the "Photographers Bill of Rights," easily findable by any internet search. In the USA, if you are on public property, you have the right to take photographs. As a person who enjoys photographing trains as a hobby (railfanning), it's something that I needed to know post-2001.

my problem is that these bldg cost so much upkeep per wk. it'll be nice if someone comes up with a mod for having a policy to reduce city govt red tape

Unfortunately these days people will find the easiest scape hole they can find. And terroisism do use these tactics against us. So im sorry i believe in Homeland security and what the police officer did to you. I would have done the same. For all we know there could be a terroists right now downloading what this federal building looks like and putting it on the black market for a hit. You must understand that. Doing what you did has already jeoperdised the people who work in that building and the American people safety. @juha39 - I was a reporter in a civilized nation for several years. Most police are OK people. Men and women. But there are cowboys and cowgirls among them that do not give a crap about your rights when they feel like their performance rating or, rightly, their safety is on the line. I'm not lecturing - but it's a bad idea to try to tell a police officer your understanding of the law when they're trying to enforce it from their understanding. Take it from me. :D.

In most civilised nations, there is a very clear rule: You can photograph everything and anything unless its a person on a private property. If a police officer tells you to leave, you have to leave, but they cannot take your camera unless they arrest you, and then they have to return it as it was and intact.
There is such a thing called Freedom of the Press, and most petty bureaucrats shit themselves when they see a press card, because theres nothing they can do other than to avoid saying things.. The thing is, there are no special laws for the rights of the media. All those rights apply to anyone and information cannot be denied from the people. Difference is that people with no subscribers are easier to bully as they are unlikely to fight back.
