Source doesn't have a good hair system, sure, but there's still ways to get around it and make it look decent- main way is mesh stacking incorporating both $alphatest and $translucent together (alphatest for the main body to avoid the discoloration and transparency from lights that translucent produces on its own, and translucent to create softer edges).
