@TheSilverInfinity empty space allows for the subscriber to add or modify the base without having to make major cosmetic or functionality changes. For example, most vanilla ship builds dont leave much free room, and if you wanted to add per say a shield mod you may have to cut out important bits of the ship to make it work.

Well, the empty space is nice if you're the sort who keeps running out of room for your modded crap when you try building a base yourself.
