The unit is balanced around Aspiring champions, one of the trashiest units in the game.
So, yeah mainly for looking dope. The unit has practically no real reason of use.

Hi Gevenoren, i found your mod recently. It looks great. But I can't see the benefit in the dawi gameplay. The Great Beards are weak and come into play very late in the game. Please forgive the question: what are they good for, other than looking good? If they are the oldest and most experienced dwarves, they should at least be magic resistant, right? Increasing the number from 16 to 24 would also be helpful.

Dwarfs are one of the strongest and most reliable combat races in the entire game. I am not giving the dawi more power than they deserve. I was thinking to ONLY focus on the Great beards in this mod.

It may be that they can more than make up for it by being a combat multiplier, of some sort, do to their age and experience." I can kind of understand. However, this is warhammer after all. Dwarfs do not seem to get weaker as they age. Look at Grombrindal for example.

Maybe go the other way. Instead of dominating combat prowess, try giving them bonuses to help Dawi combat power as a whole?

I have been thinking of more ways to make them balanced, without making them blatantly stronger than Aspiring champions. I feel that this is the reason why they kind of suck, it's because I am basing them on Aspiring champions, who're already likely the worst unit in WOC's roster.

Mod updated. Added a custom ROR variants, known as the "Wardens of Karak Drazh". Hope you guys like them it as much as I do!

The Great Beards has undergone some balance changes. To be better than the Aspiring champions. They're still rather EH, but they're fun to use. I've been thinking of ways to make them better to be used with the Dwarfs, as they have been known to suck. Which they do. I've been wondering to give Thorgrim Grudgebearer some bonuses to affect the Great Beards further. Any thoughts?

I personally think some RoR units would be awesome. I like more variety and choices that don't break the Faction "Theme" (Cavalry for dwarves, Gunpowder for elves, Ranged units for chaos, etc..)

@gideon1473 I tested them just now, they can easily beat Longbeards both variants 1v1. That's a good quality for a 16 man unit of this rare calibre.

Tbh, 80 or so kills with this unit is rather satisfactory for the price point. Also blindly throwing in units into the fray is not how all units should be played :P

I'll try them again as a specific lord fighter, I was just throwing them into the enemy army and watching them die to everything and get less than 80 kills. will try again

I'd also take look at what techs that boost them. They share neat upgrades on later era techs that also upgrades hammerers.

@gideon1473 remember, these are based on the Aspiring Champions unit type. They're rightfully garbage as well. Take this more as a flavor unit. I am aiming on creating a ROR type for this unit, which should highten the interest for this unit. Also, I could revisit the unit balancing, but from what I recall they're not that awful, given what they're based on.

They're significantly better than the aspiring champions, and I find it rather unnessecary to up them too much, but I will heed you and try them out. I might see if I can increase their combat survival chances while reducing their effectiveness as a good hero and lord killer.

These units are too weak. I tried them and they're a bit of a disappointment. They dont tear up hardly any types of infantry and get destroyed by pretty much all ranged. I would reccommend giving them a non stackable map-wide ability that buffs the army to incentivize players to put 1 in an army. Then a slight buff to armor/warding/damage would go over well. You can only recruit these from one t5 landmark on the map. It's ok for them to be a bit stronger

the great beards work in my sfo campain, no prob. they might not be balanced, but i dont really care if they do their job properly. they bodyguard my runelord fantasticly, so im happy :)

@flameshroud I have heared that SFO adds a lot of skills and techs. I cannot guarentee this unit works with them unless he uses a specific unit_set that are tied to the greatbeards. I have always focus on current balance for my units and pretty much any mod. I am not overhauling anything, I work with what's currently there and tries to make it "fit in".

I am glad you enjoy it, I would just suggest to not use SFO with my mods. You'd need to ask someone to make a compatible version for you.

its just that in sfo, if you have a special unit of hammerers for instance, they benefit from every tech that buffs hammerers.
usually the sfo dev are too lazy to change texts on the skills themselves, the special sfo units just have a little tekst:"benefit from ranger skill/tech". sorry if i caused confusion on your end. you nicely name every skill that effects greatbeards, i don't really know how i could get confused :/

@flameshround I recommend to read the red lord skill trees, and also check the campaign selection screen for Thorgrim, as his upkeep reduction bonus should include greatbeards :P You will see that many texts have been edited to feature Greatbeards. (granted you do not have a conflict, and since you're running with SFO I cannot guarentee anything). Happy hunting!

anyway, for the longbeard tech question, i wanted to know if the red longbeard skill tree of lords also affected greatbeards. i do know where the research of the greatbreards are.

@flameshroud no intention on making them a guardian unit. Regarding SFO compability, I sincerely doubt they are compatible with their unit stats being as it is. They do work with longbeard tech. Read the description about that :P

just wanted to let you know, i used the glorious great beard in an sfo campain and it works perfectly i don't really know wy people are harassing you with compatibility questions.

i had a question though, do they benefit from longbeard tech? i don't think so, but just to confirm.

i also have a suggestion. i use them as a sort of royal guard for my lord, and i think it fits quite well. Maybe add the 'guardian' ability (the one that gives physical resist to heroes and lords) and tweak their stats a bit to compromise.
