I'd really like to use this mod and I've event put in some cool custom ranks in the config. But in-game, nothing has changed. Are you sure this works with the most recent WOTC?

not working on dlc works on vanilla tho
Mask 20 Feb, 2024 @ 4:25pm
Btw this mod didn't do anything, they still have 7 ranks total not 8. What could it be?

How does this mod work with Reworking Hero Classes like Project mods which reworks Templar, Skirmisher and Reapers?
Captain DuoDex 18 Sep, 2022 @ 8:18am
Hi, just wanted to ask if this mod is still working / still updated. Seems not to be working in my most recent save.
Fyrebrand18 15 Apr, 2021 @ 12:07pm
That's awesome. Thanks man.
Cato  [author] 15 Apr, 2021 @ 2:35am
Yes, just copy a Hero class entry from and define the desired class template. Will even work for custom classes added by mods if you know the exact template name.

e.g.

[Ranger X2SoldierClassTemplate]
RankNames[0]="Chad"
...

[cc_Inferno X2SoldierClassTemplate]
RankNames[0]="Hades"
...

Is it possible to add ranks for specific classes? For instance, having a different rank system for rangers?

Thank you! You are a hero.
Cato  [author] 14 Feb, 2020 @ 5:59am
You need a class mod which will provide the additional rank + abilities for your soldier. This mod will then allow the new rank to be renamed.

LW Classes or my own Chimera Classes will add rank 8 for you.

Alternatively, yes I guess you could do this yourself on vanilla classes. Navigate to

Steam\steamapps\common\XCOM 2\XCom2-WarOfTheChosen\XComGame\Config

Open DefaultClassData in notepad++ and paste the following string below the Colonel entry for each XclassType

Thanks for the great mod! One question: Will this mod provide an additional rank beyond Colonel rank in the original? Or do I need to enable LW perk pack in order to have that functionality? Is there an option (if it does not provide an additional rank without that perk pack) to add just a rank without any new set of abilities (that is, just stat bonuses, but no new abilities)? Thanks!
chaosSDTAGW 24 Nov, 2019 @ 10:45pm
That got it. Thanks for all the assistance! I love having a more non-military feel for the Resistance
Cato  [author] 24 Nov, 2019 @ 10:40pm
Try pasting the ranks directly into your vanilla game settings within xcomgame.int.

Steam\steamapps\common\XCOM 2\XCom2-WarOfTheChosen\XComGame\Localization\INT

Ctrl+F to find the X2ExperienceConfig section.

If that still does not work then you definitely still have a mod or file overwriting vanilla.
chaosSDTAGW 24 Nov, 2019 @ 10:27pm
Afraid that didn't do it. PsiOps and the Hero classes get the mod ranks, but regular XCOM operatives are stubbornly demanding default military ranks
chaosSDTAGW 24 Nov, 2019 @ 9:55pm
I'll try that, thanks
Cato  [author] 24 Nov, 2019 @ 7:23pm
When is the last time you cleared your ini cache?

This is really important when changing mods, especially before starting a new save. Follow XCOM Community Wiki Guidance .
chaosSDTAGW 24 Nov, 2019 @ 2:44pm
The only mod I'm running that has the "X2SoldierClassTemplate" line in its localisation file is RealityMachina's MEC Troopers mod, but it doesn't have the "X2ExperienceConfig" line.

Also, I tried starting a new campaign with just this mod running, and it still didn't show the revised ranks
Cato  [author] 24 Nov, 2019 @ 3:18am
You may be using a class overhaul mod which is forcing the old ranks. For example LWOTC.

If you have a class mod, check it's directory for a localisation file. Ctrl+F search for entries under X2SoldierClassTemplate.

Having a weird situation where my Psi Operatives use the new ranks, but my regular XCOM troops use the default ranks. Any ideas?
Cato  [author] 23 Nov, 2019 @ 5:31pm
Surprise update for 2019

- Changed the default ranks a little.
- Added Psi Operative ranks
- Added the code for Hero Classes (disabled by default)
Dawnpromise 3 Jun, 2018 @ 1:25pm
I enjoy being able to customize my ranks with this mod. That said I had to revert the 'Fighter' rank back to 'Squaddie'. It's such a an informal rank name that I think it fits well with the 'guerrilla resistance' theme.
Cato  [author] 13 Apr, 2018 @ 11:03am
@Magnus Let me know what new Hero ranks you come up with. If I like it I may patch this functionality out to all current users. Psi Operatives and Mechs could also be changed.
Cato  [author] 13 Apr, 2018 @ 10:58am
Yes! I have just tested this for you and it works fine.
-------------

1) Navigate to this mods install folder within your Steam directory:
Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\268500\1123970618\Localization

2) Open the XcomGame.int file in Microsoft Notepad.

3) Copy and paste the contents of this pastebin file directly below the existing Rank names: https://pastebin.com/TtdKWf97

4) Change the names as you wish!

The mod script will apply the change on load. Works with existing saves.

Hey there! Do you know if there is any possible way to separate the Heroes (skirmishers/templars/Reapers) ranks' from the regular ranks? Thanks in advance!
Cato  [author] 1 Jan, 2018 @ 6:18am
It is not currently used in-game as Firaxis created it in but never utilised it.

In the base game Long War 2 mod unlocked this rank for use. I do not believe there are any mods for WOTC which use it yet.
Emperor Mollune Veilis Emouran 31 Dec, 2017 @ 7:31pm
how do i get to the brigadier rank, it doesnt show up for me nor do i know how to access it
Die By My Sword666 30 Dec, 2017 @ 1:07pm
Hi. Thanks for the quick reply. Cool, I never knew that. I like that you've told folk how to change the ranks. Other mods don't.
Cato  [author] 30 Dec, 2017 @ 1:03pm
You can safely ignore it or delete it, as the rank exists in the vanilla game code.
Die By My Sword666 30 Dec, 2017 @ 12:35pm
How does this work if I'm not playing with a mod that has Brigadier? Do I just delete it from the ini file?
Cato  [author] 18 Sep, 2017 @ 12:41pm
And you need Commando's to take on the Chosen Lair! :B1:
Cato  [author] 18 Sep, 2017 @ 12:40pm
Sorry for the delay I've been away.

Yes! Every menu will reflect the new titles. e.g. Mission Reward will be 'Elite Grenadier Van Doorn'
Poseidenj 16 Sep, 2017 @ 2:50pm
Does this also reflect in the Guerilla tactics school and covert ops missions?
Cato  [author] 5 Sep, 2017 @ 9:10am
@SilentHastati - That makes sense, if I ever feel the urge to add Psi Trooper new ranks to this mod I may change out Shocktrooper. That said, I'm kind of fond of the Resident Evil vibe of that rank!
Cato  [author] 5 Sep, 2017 @ 9:07am
Glad you like it Scoritn, did you know you can switch those two ranks around for yourself using the instructions above? :ethereal:
Scoritn 4 Sep, 2017 @ 7:22pm
my opinon, but operator and veteran should be swiched around. however i do love this and am currently using it.
MV3 4 Sep, 2017 @ 7:40am
highest rank should be "MV3" and only obtainable by one
Silent Hastati 3 Sep, 2017 @ 10:42am
Yeah, I changed Shocktrooper to Guerilla, to sorta signify that they are fighters allowed more autonomy and responsibility lorewise.
Tyrant 31 Aug, 2017 @ 4:52am
The only one I don't really like is Shocktrooper, but still, this is a great improvement over Vanilla.
That unnervingly happy turtle. 30 Aug, 2017 @ 5:57pm
Have to say I love the idea of the mod and the new ranks.

Also have to admit that I love how on mods like this people say how they get triggered by the 'Squaddie' rank. Whilst not an actual rank it is what you would be referred to in the British Army, Royal Marines and SAS as an informal title for an enlisted soldier.
Cato  [author] 30 Aug, 2017 @ 3:48pm
Heh, each to their own. Let me know some of your favourites!
Hyomoto 30 Aug, 2017 @ 3:44pm
I hate these 'ranks' completely! But I love how easy you've made it to adapt whatever I do want! Though honestly, outside of 'squaddie' the base ranks have never really bothered me.
Cato  [author] 30 Aug, 2017 @ 3:44pm
Fair point, I was using Pavonis classes on original X2 where there was much more variety.

Mod updated with revised rank names and minor edits.

Apologies to anyone who already set their own custom ranks, you will need to change the .int file once more.
Rabid Dutchman 30 Aug, 2017 @ 12:10pm
This is great! And thanks for including the guide on how to adjust the rank names, that's a nice touch.
Moikle 30 Aug, 2017 @ 11:57am
Hold on a sec, we already have something called a specialist in the game
Cato  [author] 30 Aug, 2017 @ 11:05am
WOTC version is live! It works on both new games, games in progress and on the new faction promotion screens. Plus I reduced the mod size down to 140kb. :ethereal:
