The 789 Series (789系) is a limited express type EMU operated by JR Hokkaido since 2002.

Manufactured for operations across the Seikan Tunnel, the 789 Series is a high performance type designed to replace remaining loco-hauled passenger trains linking Hokkaido with Honshu. It has a high cab design similar to the KiHa 261 DMUs designed produced at the time, and a walk-through door is located below the cab to allow flexible train lengths. Rather uniquely, the 789-0 series was produced in 2 or 3 car sets, but each set has only one leading type car, with the opposite end being a middle car equipped with a simplified cab for technical manuevers. Revenue-earning operations are always carried out with at least 2 sets, with the middle cars coupled to each other to form a single train with leading cars on both sides, 3 sets can also form a single train with an awkward looking connection between a middle car and a leading car in the middle of the formation. The 789-1000 series was produced in 2007 for limited express trains in the Sapporo area, these vehicles do not have a walk-through front door and always operates in fixed 5 car sets. They are also not equipped with a green car, but an upgraded 'U-Seat' reserved car. 40 cars were produced in the 0 series and 35 in the 1000 series, for a total of 75 cars. From 2002-2017, the 789-0 series operated as Super Hakucho from Hachinohe (later Shin-Aomori) to Hakodate. After the Hokkaido Shinkansen's opening, they were transferred to Sapporo after a brief period out of service. Now operating as 6-car sets, the serve limited express Lilac between Sapporo and Asahikawa, while the 1000 series operates Kamui on the same route, the distinction is maintained as the two types have significant differences in service offerings. 66 cars are currently in active service, one 1000 series set was scrapped after an accident in 2011, while two 2-car 0 series sets were left behind at Hakodate Depot during the transfer and remains in storage.
