NOTICE (24.11/11)

The 19th century CE was a watershed moment in the history of all mankind. It didn't just witness the rise of unprecedented technological innovation and automation in industry, but also recognised that all human beings are equal, and so are worthy not just of freedom, but are also deserving of peace, dignity and perpetual harmony.

Although today's world faces so many challenges in achieving these ends for all mankind, the need for them has but grown, along with our obligation to further strive to attain and maintain them, be it as individuals contributing on our own, or as an international collective working together across all borders and seas.

INTRO

The final argument of kings. —inscription of French cannon cast by Louis XIV of France (1638-1715)

Ultima Ratio is the first Chapter of Rise of the Moderns, and covers 24 factions of the Imperial Era, spanning the careers of Nader Shah and Napoleon.

In Ultima Ratio you will get to discover the world of the early 19th century. A world of intrigue and bloody-minded ambition set against the gradually quickening pace of life under the wonders of science and industry. From the battlefields of Europe and America to the mountains of India, a whole new world awaits those who are able to have the final say in global affairs.

Like all Rise of Nations mods, Ultima Ratio also has its own set of custom-designed factions as well as its own wonders, all loosely based on the Rise of Napoleon mod by Ray Tang.

FEATURES

The original Rise of Napoleon, but with a twist.......

- New naval units and artillery units. While Rise of Napoleon ended in the 1820s, Ultima Ratio now covers not just Rise of Napoleon, but also the technologies and units of the pre-1860s era.
- A massive slew of units have been added to non-Western factions.
- An updated tech tree to reflect thee 19th centiry .... and its major intellectual, social and technological development.
- A vast new array of defensive structures awaits your build orders.
- Bugs involving buildings, especially forts and castles, have been zapped — along with various historical inaccuracies
- Fixing the building system - various bugs impede research and prevent units that were originally meant to be trained from being recruited by human players:
- Multiple defensive buildings - meant to cater to different levels of wealth and development, with Blockhouses being the cheapest but not being able to be garrisoned, and mighty Citadels and Fortresses meant to represent the all-new polygonal systems of fortification in 19th century Europe.
- Entertainment districts - pubs and public buildings - will have new graphics associated with them. The Public Building will be given the very Malaysian name of "Rest House", since this better describes the function of such buildings beyond Europe.
- Unit makeovers. Some units, including Danish kanonchalup, Rocket artillery, Barbary corsairs and the ship of the line all received new skins and animations.
- New factions: Iran and Bavaria. These replace the former Canadian and Westphalian factions from Rise of Napoleon.
- More politically correcthistorically accurate non-European factions.
o Lakota: loses the Buffalo Braves, but gets Spearmen who are shared with many non-European factions.
o China: no more: Manchu Palace Guard, instead there are Imperial Halberdiers, Green Banner Musketeers, Manchu Musketeers as well as Tiger Men.
o India: army is reformed to resemble that of Mysore's.
o Turkey: Graphics overhaul for Janissaries, introduction of Nizam e Cedit cavalry and infantry.
o Egypt, Maghreb - different set of bonuses for Maghreb.

PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE GETTING CRASHES OF ANY KIND

While we take pains to ensure a smooth player experience, we nevertherless advise players to take note of all the following data whenever they start a new game:

- Factions chosen
- Map size
- Presence of snow/water
- (if a crash occurs) what you were doing and what age you were in when it happened.

These are issues that are being looked at and which should be corrected in future.

In the meantime we advise strongly against the use of random players. For best results, you should take down notes on which games had snow or navigable ocean, and what factions were used. Why not use a virtual dice thrower to select the factions for you instead?

NOTICE (24.11/11)

The early modern period was a watershed moment in the history of all mankind. It didn't just witness the rise of unprecedented technological innovation in industry, but the emergence of a single crucial idea: that all human beings are equal, and so are worthy not just of freedom, but are also deserving of peace, dignity and perpetual harmony.

This one idea underpins the whole of global civilization and the benefits we as human beings enjoy, but has come increasingly under threat, thus we as members of the human race are obliged to further strive to attain and maintain them, be it as individuals contributing on our own, or as an international collective working together across all borders and seas. INTRO

"The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present.” —Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

As its name suggests, Forge of Storms is a sub-mod meant to be a sequel to Ultima Ratio and extends the scope and timeline of Ultima Ratio well beyond the Napoleonic Wars and towards the end of the 19th century, eventually covering several more conflicts in the process, most notably the all-consuming American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. Like all Rise of Nations mods, it has its own set of 24 factions as well as its own wonders, all loosely based on the Rise of Napoleon mod by Ray Tang.

For the first time in a long time, this mod finally received a backdrop-based low-tri buffer file.
This affected the late-game Salon (not available for this mod), and was made by the following procedures:

- A cuboid shape, approximate as large and wide as RoN's long buildings, was inserted into Blender, and subdivided. The front and top parts of this cuboid were removed, to form a skybox of sorts.
- This skybox was then rotated, 45 deg on the y-axis,and then rotated back by 60 degrees, reversing the process for making a plane-based, billboard type low-tri buffer file. The corner of this buffer file was set at exactly 0,0,0.
- A plane was then textured with and unwrapped, to fit a sample of a building TGA. This plane had its lower edge placed at the x-axis, with the middle point at 0,0,0.
- The skybox had its appearance set in Blender as to allow only its wireframe to be visible. This was then cut using the Knife tool, from a top down orthographic view, to reflect the contours of the plane depicting the building TGA. Unwanted parts from the skybox were deleted.
- More details to mask node effects (eg fire and smoke) were then cut out of the plane, and joined to the skybox buffer mesh.
- We then subjected this to the same procedures - rotate on z-axis for 45 deg, and the y-axis for 60 deg so as to match up the camera view lowered down by 30 degrees to view the scene. Nodes were added, the mesh was reparented to the nodes' armature, and then exported.

So far this mesh works. although in retrospect, I think it could've been better had we move id further inward since the TGA itself hd a lot of foreground objects, but as long as it works and doesn't look too weird, I'm not going to complain. We can use this method for Bronze Dawn's first Wonders.
