Don't know what to tell you, I'm afraid. I sure haven't found anything out of order on my end. My last idea is to check your mods folder, though you probably already have. I've got nothing, so best of luck.
I have looked through my mods and found nothing effecting the distortion sphere. I also tryed the unsub-resub thing to no avail. I will try the oringinal xtech if that will fix it.
I just tested it myself with the current version and it's working completely fine. If you have another mod that affects the distortion sphere, this mod may not work. Otherwise, try unsubscribing, waiting a few seconds, and then resubscribing (this has solved an issue before.)
I know, right? All those poor villages I rolled through...
