"Pax Romana"

turn 127/1450

A thousand years of wise leadership under your steady hand has born a golden age within the Roman Republic. The citizens of the republic enjoy unique luxuries and opportunities from around the Mediterranean. Settlements span from Western Gaul and Brittany to Constantinopolis. Founded at the crossroads between east and west, it will link the Pontus Novum to the Seven Seas and open new lands for colonia.

Many great civilizations have risen in this time, and two have fallen from once-great glory to serve as footnotes in the annals of history. Alexander of Macedon and Cyrus of Persia. Both titled with the honorific "the Great" in Our Timeline, they quickly succumbed to the might of Sparta and Sumeria. Led by Queen Gorgo, Sparta's military boats prodigious numbers. Their tactics have not advanced beyond the skirmish however, and they would swiftly fall to the might of your legio should you choose to invade. Sumeria, lead by the epic Gilgamesh, swiftly absorbed their Persian neighbors in the highlands to the north of their capital in Mesopotamia before moving west to absorb the Arabian capital Dimasqu and two settlements on the Tigris and Euphrates.

To your north are many Germanic kingdoms. King Jadwiga has been highly successful in capturing Frederick's capitol Berlin, and settlements Ostrawa, Zielona Gora, and Lubeck. Relations between both kingdoms and Rome have remained strongly friendly for centuries, bolstered by trade and treaty, but a choice looms on the future horizon. To the west, Catherine de Medici leads the Franks in Gaul. Though your wise rule has kept Roma out of costly military engagements in the past, tensions are high between you. Scouts report vast numbers of troops on the border. A new tax was imposed upon all citizens of the republic to pay for a large professional army to garrison the valuable trade province. Our generals report these new eques light cavalry are the best advance in tactics the world has seen.

Many great strategists flock to our Republic to serve the Senate and the People of Rome. Boudicca of the Iceni and Sun Tzu are both at your service. Boudicca's shrewd negotiations may convert barbarian tribes into Roman soldiers and Sun Tzu's writings on the Art of War will surely inspire Roman culture through the ages. The senate has recently voted Gaius Duilius to lead the Roman Navy as Admiral. If Sparta does attempt a naval invasion he could be instrumental in fending them off.
