Alpino Batt. Monte Cervino 1942 URSS WW2

The Alpine Battalion Monte Cervino was formed in the winter of 1915 and was awarded with a silver medal. The Battalion Alpine Skiers Monte Cervino was formed again in 1940, and consisted of volunteers, bachelors that were able to ski. At the beginning of the war the battalion was sent to Albania, where it suffered very high losses. Then was rebuilt and was sent to Russia in 1942 with the CSIR, where stood on the Don in reinforcing of the divisions Torino and Pasubio. Often used to buffer the most critical situations. The Monte Cervino gained the respect of the Soviets from which were nicknamed "Satanas bjieli" (Devils white). At the end of 1942 the Russian began the second battle of the Don that led to collapse of the entire Italian-German front. The retreat from the Don front was protected by the Monte Cervino that stopped the enemy giving time to retire to the Don's Army, until January 15, 1943 when the battalion was finally destroyed, after stopping a group of Russian tanks, destroying 12, the Monte Cervino ended ammunition, and found himself surrounded the battalion decided to counter-attack the Russians with petrol bombs and bayonets, in the days following the survivors died fighting or were taken prisoner.
