I've learned from PvP that hydrogen should only be used situationally as combat thrusters. Something you trigger via a timer block setup, so you can use the timer get a few seconds of hydrogen when you need it, the it shuts off.
Biggest issue with having a pure hydrogen combat vessel (be it small or large grid) is watching your hydrogen level. In the heat of combat you quickly focus on the battle and before you know it your out of hydrogen. The other issue is your conveyor system an hydrogen tang/generator are now weak points that can cripple your ship if destroyed.
All things considered I recommend a hybrid of ion & hydrogen for thrust.
