UPDATE

After three years, the Build your own Cape Town update is now available. Enjoy :)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Realistic (map) recreation of Cape Town, South Africa. Currently in play-testing before the final release.

Real GIS data as well as road overlays were used to create a scale model of Cape Town, including the City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, Southern Suburbs and some of the West Coast and Northern Suburbs. Because this is a game, I took one or two liberties with smoothing terrain, roads and rails. In previous attempts at this map I created more of the network and the complex interchanges featured in real life, however - as a map this is meant to be a blank canvas so whereas I've left space for accurate network recreation, it's simplified to only basics now. Despite this, the map remains highly accurate.

I may release a version in future with accurate networks and even roads but for now I'd love you to give this map a try and leave some feedback to help get it ready for release. My goal is nothing less a top 1% map in the workshop in terms of quality, realism, playability and challenge. Cape Town deserves no less.

Screenshots use daylight classic, though not required.

Enjoy.

A big thank you to MrMiyagi as well as the super talented OWL, BloodyPenguin & Mr. Maison.

Hmm... I think that will be fixed in this release. You can let me know :)

In the process of getting screenshots and writing a guide since its a little more complicated than just a map. This weekend, promise.

Awesome I'd love to check it out also! I was building a city on your old map but it would be awesome to have roads to start with.

There is something else I was wondering about:

I wan't to build a nice harbour with yacht jetties and piers etc... but I find the water level is way too low... it seems very difficult to get it right - do you have any pointers?

Here's a screenshot:

It's a pleasure man. There have been a lot of new mods that would improve the project immensely but I know the version I have now is much, much better than this one already. I'm going to try and put what I have out this weekend :)

Thanks for an awesome map! I was actually going to ask if you still have the original overlay as I'd like to put down accurate roads but I see in the thread you're working on a new map that looks amazing! Any idea on when you'll release that? Would rather wait for that than invest more time in this one. Thanks!

Awesome, thank you!

@IOIIOOIO I actually had to start again myself (on the map).

The scale was simply too tricky to build a realistic city. To solve this issue, I've been working on Savegame which includes all the road and rail infrastructure of Cape Town. The new map covers a slightly smaller area but will not require NeXT (81 Tiles will always be essential).

Here are some teasers of the save game. [imgur.com]

I'm glad people are still interested in Cape Town. My goal with this project is to give people thje ability to recreate or redesign one of the most amazing cities in the world.

Stay tuned :)

Is the 81 Tiles Mod absolutely required? I see it has quite a few issues.
