Deo Vindice: A CSA in WWII Mod

Description
I. What This Is
If you're like me -- and I know I am -- you enjoy some alternate history scenarios in HoI4. Since I'm an ACW buff with free time, I created the original (HoI2) version of this mod in 2006. Subsequent versions followed for every new game expansion, with the current one compatible with HoI4: Graveyard of Empires/Version 1.16.10.

It's that simple and unambitious, but hopefully can save you, the downloading public, some grunt work if you're interested in playing an extant, long-standing, post-emancipation Confederacy in the 1936 scenario. As fellow Southerner Hunter S. Thompson advised, "Buy the ticket -- Take the ride."

II. What This Pre-Supposes
In September 1862, the Confederate States of America win the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam for the Southern-impaired) and their independence when that victory triggers the British and French Empires' intervention into the War Between the States. European intervention is made politically possible in part because, in the absence of a Northern victory, the Emancipation Proclamation never leaves President Lincoln's desk drawer.

Peace is negotiated and borders are drawn, with major rivers (like fences, they make for good neighbors) as the main guide. Disputed areas are awarded to the side with the most brogans on a particular piece of ground. Thus, Missouri remains in the Union while Kentucky (then host to Braxton Bragg's army) is awarded to the Confederacy. Virginia refuses to be partitioned and retains all its antebellum lands, thereby maintaining the Ohio River as an acceptable boundary between the formerly warring nations (and as a result, the proposed Union state of West Virginia never comes to be).

The Union accepts the Confederate Territory of Arizona at the boundaries established in August 1861 in exchange for the Confederacy's renouncing all other claims on western lands. Confederate Arizona becomes a state in early 1912, with its capital at Phoenix.

The Indian Territories, home to the "Five Civilized Tribes" (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole), retain a large degree of internal autonomy while still electing representatives to the Confederate House of Representatives and coordinating their foreign policy with Richmond's. While not officially Confederate states, the "Civilized Tribes" nations are nonetheless something very close to it.

The United States finds the taste of defeat bitter, but learns to coexist with its new sovereign neighbor to the South. Within a short time, the U.S. gets on with the things it strove for in the antebellum period: settling the West and becoming a great power.

History records 1880 as one of the most pivotal years in Confederate history. With the collapse of the cotton economy, the CSA finally bow to international pressure and end slavery. While equality for blacks is at least a century away, they are then at least free. The year also marks the beginnings of mass industrialization throughout the South, a development that secures the Confederacy's place as a world power.

In 1898 "yellow journalism" and the destruction of the warship CSS Arkansas in Havana Harbor draw the CSA into war with Spain. A swift Southern victory in the Hispano-Confederate War follows, and in its aftermath the C.S. are awarded Puerto Rico and install a puppet government in Cuba. Similarly (and opportunistically), the U.S. successfully presses its claims on Guam and the Philippines.

The Confederacy's confidence remains high as it joins the Allied side in the Great War at Britain's behest in 1914. However, wary of stripping their defenses & inviting a U.S. attack, most of the C.S. Army remains in North America until the United States joins the Allies in 1917.

On August 27, 1918, the Battle of Ambos Nogales ensues when a suspected Mexican gun smuggler crosses the border into Nogales, Sonora followed by a C.S. Customs agent and two C.S. soldiers. A Mexican soldier watching the incident shoots, hitting one of the C.S. soldiers. Return fire kills the Mexican soldier. Reinforcements from both sides then rush to the border to fight, leading to a successful Confederate assault on the opposing hilltop positions on the Mexican side of the border. Among the dead are two alleged German military advisors.

German advisors in neutral Mexico participating in an act of aggression against the Confederacy prompt C.S. President Woodrow Wilson's ordering the "Punitive Expedition" to occupy the Mexican province of Sonora in retaliation. Under the Versailles Treaty, the Confederacy is granted Sonora as a “temporary stabilization mandate,” giving it access to the Pacific and burgeoning trade with Asia.

In 1936, the U.S. and C.S. still aren't pals, but have learned to get along and stay out of each other's way: the C.S. are let alone in Mexico and the Caribbean, while the U.S. pursues its interests in the Pacific and elsewhere. Thus, history pretty much follows its regional course for both nations, right through to the Great Depression and the start of the scenario. The Confederacy remains close to the British--a step shy of being an actual Commonwealth nation--but too deep in isolation and Depression to be a player on the world stage, of the sort that could immediately aid Britain in the event of war in Europe.

(Sure, there are good arguments why this all couldn't/wouldn't have happened, and I'm not dismissing any of them. However, there're already great mods out there which simulate ongoing hostility between a defeated Union and a victorious Confederacy. My mod is simply an alternative for those who want to play out a different possibility.)

III. So What's So Great About This Mod, Huh?
You mean besides saving you months of research, scripting, and graphic design? Well, other than that, I got nothin'.

IV. Compatibility

DV works with any or all *official Paradox DLC*. It is NOT designed to work with ANY other mods, so combine at your own risk!

V. Special Thanks

Any new Content in the near Future?

@Warmaster-Horus: The Tribes uniting is an interesting idea. Definitely something I have in mind for when I get 'round to doing more detailed tribal trees.

Appreciate the alt name suggestions, but happy with my choices there.

The KOGC take over the CSA if you complete the existing fascist tree. Then you are free to try to conquer any or all of those lands as you wish -- no further modding needed.

I'm good with keeping the CSA in line with all other nations in HoI and just showing their national flag. And you get the Southern Cross on that!

Thanks for checking out DV and the ideas!

Also may i suggest adding music for this mod that is for the CSA?
Warmaster-Horus 29 Sep @ 9:44am
Also maybe combine the Indian tribes into one nation which can join or be added the CSA, both peacefully and by force.

May I suggest adding a expansion tree for the CSA because the so called Knights of the Golden Circle wanted to expand the CSA after the civil war, by buying the islands of the Caribbean, also conquering Mexico and Central America also add the ability to add more states to the CSA after expanding, both Peaceful and by Conquest, and the Confederation of Dixieland as the new fascist name and the Social Republic of Southron America for Communists sounds like a good idea, also maybe add the ability to change flags when democratic between the war flag of the CSA and Peace time one.

Fair enough.

@Siren System: For sure all of that could've happened, even likely to have. But a CSA choosing that path won't be around in 1936, and then I got nothing to mod. The CSA only survive by allying with the UK, and the British are only going to put up with so much abominable behavior. So the Confederacy is still racist and backwards AF, but in DV also has a survival instinct.

I have never claimed the DV history is the most likely outcome -- far from it, because clearly that's the CSA getting crushed by the USA sooner or later. DV is just the most likely outcome that still has a Confederacy around at the start of the HoI4 timeline.

You vastly underestimated the CSA's evils. They planned to Industrialize Slavery. And even if they "got rid of" slavery they'd just switch to prison or debt slavery but say it isn't slavery (kindof like modern America's 13th amendment but even worse).
