Introduction
//// STILL A WIP ////

This a simple guide about trading.

That's it,
Nothing else.

jk jk

In this guide we'll talk about currencies, item qualities, and the basic do's and don'ts of trading.
So without further ado, let's get into trading boyos!
TF2's Currency
Currently there are 4 main currencies in Team Fortress 2
They are (from lowest value to highest):
  1. Scrap Metal (0.11 Ref)

  2. Reclaimed Metal (0.33 Ref)

  3. Refined Metal (1.00 ref)

  4. Mann Co. Keys / Keys ( ~27 ref)

  5. Buds

Buds were once a prevailent tf2 currency due to them being more expensive than keys, but have since fallen out of usage due to them being much cheaper than they were back in the day.

  6. Max's Severed Head ( ~17.7 keys/ 531.00 ref)

  7. Hat of Undeniable Wealth And Respect ( ~47 keys/ 1410.00 ref)

The Hat of Undeniable Wealth And Respect, abbreviated to HOUWAR, is a promotional cosmetic item for all classes. It is a worn-out tricorne hat being worn backwards, topped by a wobbly, ♥♥♥♥-eyed, gray colored octopus with orange spots, which is grasping a small treasure chest. Uniquely, the octopus is animated and will look around, close one of its eyes, or move its tentacles when idle.
This hat was awarded to players that completed all 28 objectives in The Great Steam Treasure Hunt. Users who completed the requisite number of objectives were required to visit the promotion page and click the "Unlock Hat" button in order to have the hat added to their backpack. If the user already had the Bounty Hat or Treasure Hat, it was upgraded to the Hat of Undeniable Wealth And Respect when all 28 objectives were completed.

Scrap, Reclaimed, and Refined metal can all be obtained via crafting and trading

Keys however, are only obtainable via purchase either in the Mann Co
Store or the SCM (Steam Community Market) and Trading

Item Qualities
Wiki Page
There are currently 12 different item qualities for Team Fortress 2, but only 8 are "Used" in trading, so we're only going to talk about those
And they are:
  1. Unique

Unique is the base quality of all items (excluding some items that do not have a unique variant)
Every unique weapon costs 0.5 scrap (2 weapons is 1 scrap), excluding some unique reskins

  2. Vintage
    Originally posted by tf2 wiki:

In the March 15, 2011 Patch, several expensive crafting recipes were modified to be cheaper. To recognize items that had been crafted while the recipes were expensive, Valve upgraded them to Vintage quality.
In some cases, items that have been re-granted to users by Steam support (after being either accidentally deleted or stolen) were assigned Vintage quality.
Vintage quality items are purchasable from the Steam Community Market
Vintage is basically an "upgrade" to unique, they have no other differences other than price (and color ofc)

  3. Genuine

Items with the "Genuine" quality can be strangified, but their names (and the item's icon in the user's backpack) will keep the "Genuine" quality color instead of changing into the "Strange" quality color. Strangified "Genuine" items will also still display the item's rank as a normal "Strange" quality item would do. "Genuine" quality items can be obtained via trading, and are also purchasable from the Steam Community Market.
Like vintages, Genuine items are basically an "upgrade" to unique items, the only difference is that genuine items can be strangified via a strangifier (as the tf2 wiki states), and also the price and color

  4. Strange
    Originally posted by tf2 wiki:

    • Unlocking a Mann Co. Supply Crate containing the item,
    • Using a Strangifier on an item,
    • Purchasing the items from the Steam Community Market,
    • Earning Botkiller weapons or Australium weapons from Mann Up mode,
    • Trading with other players for them.

Strange weapons track kills or other various events (see Notes below for exceptions), and records them as an item attribute, allowing the count to be viewable by other players and the owner. Cosmetic items with the Strange quality track the number of points scored while wearing the item. Strange items are awarded new ranks as their counters increase, with the rank affixed to the beginning of the item's name. Each time a Strange item reaches a new rank, the event is announced to all players on the server with a message in the chat box; A notification pop-up will appear, accompanied by a sound, but only for the player the strange item belongs to.
Decorated weapons with the Strange quality will have a "Stat-Clock" placed on the weapon that increments in real-time.
Strange items are items that track a specific score / scores coressponding to that item

For example, strange weapons track kills that particular weapon has. Strange cosmetics track the accumulated gameplay score that player has while wearing that specific cosmetic.

Strange skins (or Stat-Track skins) are basically an "upgrade" to the usual stranges. That "upgrade" being how you can see how many accumulated kills that weapon has via inspecting it and seeing the "Stat-Clock" or "Stat-Counter" attached to that weapon.

  5. Unusuals
    Originally posted by tf2 wiki:

Unusual items have special attached particle effects, and are considered to be some of the rarest items in Team Fortress 2. There are currently 416 cosmetic items that can have one of 66 total effects, 18 taunts that can have one of 15 total effects, and 10 weapons that can have one of 4 effects. The only methods of obtaining an Unusual item are by unlocking a Mann Co. Supply Crate with a Mann Co. Supply Crate Key (at an about one in one hundred, or 1.00%, chance of unboxing.[1]), purchasing one on the Steam Community Market, or via trading.

Unlike regular items which can only be obtained from specific crates, any item obtainable in Unusual quality can be unboxed from any given crate, however the particle effects obtained depends on the series of crate the unusual item was obtained from. So, to unbox a cosmetic item with a "Series One" effect, a "Series One" crate must be opened, and so forth.
Unusuals / Unusual items are by far the most expensive items available in Team Fortress 2, the most expensive being a rumored Unusual Killer Exclusive, which sold for about $12.000 in PayPal money (according to rumours)

Why are these so expensive? Simple, the Rarity of them.

There is a fixed 1% chance of anyone unboxing these, with an exception of the "boosted" 2% of Scream Fortress 2016's double unusual unbox chance

  6. Haunted
    Originally posted by tf2 wiki:

Costume pieces from the Very Scary Halloween event could be obtained in Haunted quality if a Haunted Halloween Gift was found in the Underworld section of Eyeaduct, or rarely from a Halloween Goodie Cauldron. During the Spectral Halloween Special, items unboxed from Eerie Crates were Haunted, with the exception of the event in which an Unusual hat was found instead.

There was also a chance that a Voodoo-Cursed Soul can be obtained in Haunted quality when a player used a Pile of Curses. The Halloween Gift Cauldron added in Scream Fortress 2014 is guaranteed to have at least one of the items from it be in Strange Haunted quality. During Scream Fortress 2015, the Merasmissions had a chance to reward the player with a random Halloween item from the previous Scream Fortress events to be Haunted, the Soul Gargoyle also had a chance to give the player a Haunted Halloween item from the previous Scream Fortress events when the Halloween Transmute was done by the player, the player would also receive a bonus Haunted item if the Halloween transmute was done 10 times.
Haunted versions of items are visually and functionally identical in-game to their Unique quality counterparts.
Haunted quality items are purchasable from the Steam Community Market.
Haunted items are similar to their non haunted counterparts, with the only difference being the "Tag" in haunted items and, in some items, the price in trading

  • Collector's

Collector's items are created via combining 200 unique versions of that item in a Chemistry Set (of the same item)

  • Decorated
    Originally posted by tf2 wiki:
Decorated is an item quality assigned to weapons with special grade factors, varying levels of exterior wear, and possibly a Strange counter and/or Unusual effect. Decorated weapons were introduced in the Gun Mettle Update.

Decorated weapons have what is essentially a cosmetic "skin", similar to Australium weapons. However, instead of Australium plating, Decorated quality weapons have a layer of paint applied in a pattern, with the pattern being based on the Weapon Collection the particular weapon is found in. Each Decorated weapon's pattern differs in scale and rotation from weapon to weapon, with the game randomizing portions of these when the weapon is first awarded. As such, it is very rare to have two Decorated weapons with the exact same pattern.
A Decorated weapon's quality consists of one of six levels of rarity, referred to as "Grades", with a separate ranking for exterior damage (referred to as "Wear"), which applies to all grades of Decorated weapons.

Decorated weapons are obtained through random drops following the completion of contracts, or unboxing specific weapon cases. Decorated weapons obtained from cases also have a chance to be Strange, a rarer chance to be Unusual, and a very rare chance to be both. Strange variants add a "Stat Clock" to the side of the weapon, which count kills (or ÜberCharges in the case of the Medi Gun).
Civilian Grade weapons (which are not found in Strange quality normally) can also have a Stat Clock applied to them using a Civilian Grade Stat Clock tool.
When holding a Decorated weapon, the player can press the inspect key (Default key: F) to trigger a stoppable animation, which examines the weapon from different angles. Decorated weapons are purely cosmetic, and have no effect on gameplay.

When mouse-hovering over a Decorated weapon in the Inventory, a detailed window will appear showing a rotating 3D model of the weapon. This window also displays the weapon's particular grade and level of exterior wear, as well as a list of weapons found within the weapon's respective collection, with a check mark next to any that the player already owns. Choosing to inspect a Decorated weapon through this context menu will open a larger window where the player can manually rotate the weapon model to see it from all angles.

In-game, the title text of Decorated weapons uses the quality color of their grade.
Decorated weapons, or skins, are, well, decorated weapons

These have both a wear quality and grade quality. Both of these affecting prices and rarity

Decorated weapons can also come in strange (stat-track) or unusual.

They are also the only types of weapons which can be inspected without any plugins / mods.
Basic Do's and Don'ts
//// IN PROGRESS ////
DO:
-Have a mobile or desktop authenticator. Nobody likes a trade hold.
-Check prices to prevent scams or accidentally buying something for a lower than intended price(this may be profit for you but c'mon, be moral)
-Refresh yourself on common scam methods.
-Take advantage of available trading related sites.

DONT:
-Always insist on listed prices, especially for uncommon items that may have screwed prices due to low sample size
-Buy individual weapons or cosmetics from the In-game store. Most of them are rip-offs.
Tips and Tricks
  • Remember that in a trade, you don't need to use only items from tf2, you can also add items from other games to drive customer investment through the roof! One such example is the game spiral knights, many owners of tf2 also own this game because of the free hat promotion and you could use this to your advantage by using in-game items instead of tf2 ones. But remember to include some tf2 items because then what would be the point of the trade?
