This is my first map in hammer, it covers some basics.

Probably a little dated in saying this (I've been away from Portal 2 for about half a year or so)...
A good way to experiment with some of the features in Hammer: try out different lighing scenes. Another way: try working with details. Custom test cretion is really an art.
