LunarZeChangeling's Guide For Newbies 2016 (OUTDATED)
By Eris
My little guide for newbies, including what to do when you first start up the game. Cause the game is confusing at the start.

For Beta Starbound and may not apply to newer versions.(In fact it won't)

Tutorial Days
The beginning of Starbound, especially the tutorial, is very confusing.

Once you have created a character, which should be simple enough, you will spawn into a broken down ship. Once you reset the power and you are set out to get the 20 crystals, go down to the surface of the planet. You will spawn on what is called a lush planet. There are desert planets, forest planets, ocean planets, even volcanic and frozen planets. The first thing you want to do after beaming down is of course, get some wood. Get you a crafting table and make shelter right next to where you beam down. This will be useful. After making your shelter, or finding one and fixing it up, you should begin to mine. This should be simple enough; Go into caves, mine out ores, and try not to die.. Get any ore you find, except for small amounts of coal, as coal doesn't serve that huge of a use, at least not for a long time. If you get really far down, just dig straight down until you see lava and glowing crystals. Gather twenty to thirty of the crystals and head to your ship and repair the thrusters.
Repaired the thrusters? Now another thing!?!?!
That is right. You have repaired the thrusters, but you still need to repair something else. The way you will get these different kind of thrusters is to go to the gate S.A.I.L mentions, and head to the outpost. Do every mission that you are given, and eventually a mining outpost mission will appear. Let me warn you though; DO NOT DO THE MISSION WITHOUT PROPER GEAR. A GUN IS HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. GO OVER TO THE NEXT SECTION FOR INFO OF GETTING A GUN
Gearing Up
FIRST GUN

To get your first gun, I recommend going through the planets. If you find a Glitch outpost, then you are doing great. Just kill everyone like a madman. You can also find gun merchants, but that isn't as fun, now is it! xD [Suggested By Aperture™] You can also find them on your home planet by walking around and opening and weapon chests you find.

BETTER WEAPONS

Of course you are going to need better weapons, but where do you get them? You can buy weapons from merchants, but I only recommend that if you find a good deal or if you can't find anything better than that. The harm level of a planet tells you if you can get better weapons or not. The higher the harm is, the better level the weapons will be. For a good explanation of the weapon level system, just search up some youtube videos.

ARMOR

Armor is going to be something you will need, but the missions at the outpost get you good armor, so just do the missions at the outpost, and you will be fine.
Once You're Off
Once you're off, just do whatever you wish. Fight monsters, get the best gear, whatever you want. The universe is yours, so go out there and use it!

The gate is in the system you are in.. I'll write a bit about it. You get to it be interacting with the pilot seat, zooming out to solar system view, then that weird gate

And I know it's for beta starbound, but... Starbound is getting the 1.0 update soon so you probably should've waited until the update to actually make a guide.

Yeahh and you usually get your first gun from weapon chests on your starter planet and it's usually a machine pistol.
