Bad design. The apeal of Portal puzzle is not to figure out "what does this button do", but "how can I use it to solve puzzle".
It is possible to get stuck in exit room without a way to get back (Areial Faith Path is one way ticet).
You say Valve's puzzles are too simple, but that's because they are appealing to casuals via the story rather than gameplay. Your removal of signs and indicators on what switches do just seems to be a lazy way of slapping on "difficulty", however.
That said, I gave it a thumbs up as I liked the rest of the puzzle after activating the white gel .
I hate to say it but this is a perfect example of 'what not to do'.
