"I can't find much from before 10th edition."
As someone who has been collecting and playing MTG since "Ice Age" came out, tokens were just whatever was at hand back then. (Coins, dice, markers, etc..) I can't remember when WOTC started including proper tokens in the boosters, but sometime around 10th feels right. You might be able to find some of the ones that some players made and printed for themselves, but that was normally only done by those players that used "Token" decks and ranged in quality from 'stick figgers' to works of art that wouldn't be out of place if they were mixed in with todays tokens.
