Is your town starving? You probably have Fishing Docks... :) ...Here are a few tips that may help

If you're having trouble feeding your citizens and you have a fishing dock that catches less than 1600 fish per year with 4 workers, consider some of the tips in this guide.

Do Not Put Docks Next to Each Other
http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=464946941
One of the worst ways to produce food is to have fishing docks within each other's radius. The images above provide a good example. One image shows the output of a dock with 4 educated workers. The other image is the same dock with another dock built right next to it. The second dock also has 4 educated workers. Notice that fish production drops from 253 fish per worker to 140 per worker.

Ouch.

Keep Other Shoreline Buildings Away from Docks
http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=465706874
It's not just other docks that impact a dock's production. Any building can impact it. These images show the first year output of the same fishing dock under 3 conditions:
  1. No other shorline buildings in its radius.
  2. A bridge next to it.
  3. A trading post next to it.
All workers are educated. As you can see, the dock produces more with #1 - when there are no other shorline buildings in its radius.

Avoid Building Docks on Rivers
http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=465744426
Lakes are often a better location for docks than are rivers, especially if you can build them offshore as described later in this guide. If you decide to build docks on a river, notice in the images above that a slight change of location can make a big difference.

If you are not sure that you have a good river location for a dock, then consider building a simple 15x15 farm instead and assign 3 workers to it. People will likely tell you this isn't the most optimal farm size*. Fine, go with their farm size. Whatever the case, notice in the following images how a 15x15 farm beats a poorly placed dock:

Also notice the fishing dock's production dropped in Year 4 when compared with Year 1. Is that because the river yields less fish over time? No. The game's AI removed two educated workers from the dock and replaced them with uneducated workers. Fish production then dropped because uneducated workers produce less than educated workers.

*Update: a very good farm size is 11x11 with 1 farmer. The farmer should be able to produce around 868 food if educated.
Close Docks that Catch < 1000 Fish
http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=469348146
Notice the "Previous Season" numbers in this screenshot. The fishers at most of these docks are catching less than 100 fish per person. Many people say citizens need 100-120 food per year to survive. If so, then these fishers will starve if they have to depend on their own catch to survive.

A fisher should catch at least enough for them and their spouse.* That is a minimum of 200-240 fish. Therefore, if you have an issue with starvation and you have a dock with 4 workers producing less than 1000 fish per year (<250 fish each), close it, and reassign the workers to more productive activities like gathering, farming, or working in mod buildings like the Colonial Charter bakery.

* Better, a fisher should catch enough to feed their own family, which can be 5 people. That means they each need to catch at least 500 fish a year.

Build Offshore Docks
http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=443351326
To do this, you need a lake and a mod that provides the Flatten Terrain function (e.g., Colonial Charter). Flatten terrain lets you bring up a rectangle of land from the bottom of a lake. You'll need a 4x3 rectangle (island) to build a dock on. Make sure you build the island in such a way that the dock's walkway (path in front of it) faces the mainland because you'll need to build a bridge to it.

If you are not sure about how to use Flatten Terrain, here is a short gif. The important thing is to count 10-12 squares from shore, then two over from that before you drag the cursor to make the 4x3 island:

Updates to this Guide
I'm happy to update the guide based on questions or comments. If you have what you feel is a correction, please provide a screenshot or artwork.

No guarantee when updates will happen... I'll get to them as soon as I have time.

Updates:
  • 2015-11-08 - Added a link to my farm guide for new players.
  • 2015-08-09 - Added a footnote about a good choice for food production being an 11x11 farm with 1 farmer.
  • 2015-07-10 - Added a note that about the recommended yearly catch for each fisther... the minimum is enough food for two people. Better is 500+ to feed a family of 5.
  • 2015-06-26 - Corrected the Avoid Rivers section that made it sound like fish production drops over time. I've done further testing that shows it doesn't. Sorry for any confusion. I will provide more details about that testing at a later date. I just wanted to correct the guide as soon as possible. Fishing can be a very consistent source of food. Docks just need good placement.
  • 2015-06-25 - Corrected three sections (overlapping docks, other building, & avoid rivers) to state workers were educated, not uneducated. Tests were done with educated workers
  • 2015-06-22 - Added a gif to show how to use Flatten Terrain.

whats the optimal fishers per dock? i heard the most efficient is 1 because the more you add the less fish the subsequent fisherman produce. but i guess 4 would be better because the price of making multiple docks?

I have fisheries along very lake and creek, and most do not produce much fish, nor did I ever expect them to.

In many instances, like my first attempt at the 900 citizen population achievement, about 400-600 citizens were able to handle all the needs of 800 people or more.

The "extra" citizens could have been assigned as mostly-worthless laborers, but instead, I let them some catch fish, producing more than they would otherwise; they might not be able to catch enough to feed themselves, but at least they produced some of their own food instead of none of it.

After a quick fail, the second unmmodded game I've played was used to get EVERY achievement except Mountain Man, and the ones that prohibit schools, farms-pastures-orchards and trading posts. (That is, every achievement that it could still possibly be unlocked by it.)

In each case, I didn't use fisheries, for the most part, to be effiecient food producers, but rather, to be better than useless productionwise.

BTW... the one thing that I'm still "struggling to figure out" is whether maybe it's better to have other "otherwise useless laborers" rather than unproductive fisherment, only because laborers have a better chance of filling a new job, or replacing the job of someone who moved away with their spouse, or died, and therefore shortening commuter times and production.

I've played around with it both ways, amd fishing seems to work better, but there's reall subtles to doing it just right.

Thanks for this. Been playing Banished for a number of years now (since release...whenever that was) and you answered a lot of questions about docks I have never really sat down to find out. Although the general idea of untilizing the fishing space best was known, the images you created were extremely helpful! Well done. Thank you again. :trophy:

Colonial Charter now also has dock fisheries. You can just extend a wooden walkway and don't need to do any terraforming

Thank you so much, I couldn't figure out why my town was starving, even though I kept building more fishing docks... turns out that they were placed badly and for every worker I assigned, I was actually increasing the food deficit. GAH!

@SeriouslyDave i cant make it far enough to get any worth while information for you but it is the medium start first 2 or three years in the best spot i can find in a good area on a lake/in a lake and cant get it over 600-800 fish a year
