SPUI - No Traffic Lights - 50x50

In 1 collection by Orchid
Smooth Slope Interchanges
12 items
Description
This SPUI doesn't have traffic lights that would restrict its capacity. Every travel direction has one lane, and most of the time vehicles can smoothly filter onto the freeway. But be wary, freeway traffic coming down onto the local road might not spread out to use all three lanes.

Size: 50 long, 50 across.
You need to preserve its spot before plopping it. I know it's huge but it's necessary for the more gentle slope.

Advantages:
Smooth slope : 5-7% climb
No traffic lights : a chaos but more capacity
All three lanes used- there is enough filter space

Recommended companion mods, not dependencies:
I recommend you use saik0's Toggle Zoning mod to disable zoning by the ramps.
Usage: Open roads panel, toggle the button off, and then place the interchange.
Alternatively, you can use somedanny's Some Roads mod to upgrade the two-lane ramps to two-lane highways. It blends very well with the surroundings. (Notice, though, that you will need to enable this mod throughout the savegame unless you revert all of the mod's roads to the vanilla onew.)

Mods that helped with this design:
Part of this design is impossible without the mighty Terraform Tool from rollo.
I used the slope mod to create this, hopefully it can be placed on more uneven terrain.
Japa's Stricter Slope Limits mod
Japa's Fine Road Heights mod

@GordonDry: Thank you for your testing! I am going to test traffic manager mod too. It can definitely improve the realism of the intersection.

I just tested this intersection with the Traffic Manager mod -> http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=427585724

@Tallinu the traffic exiting the freeway doesn't use all three lanes as the picture might seem. The drivers first decide which way to go at the next intersection, then they will change to the corresponding lane. The picture is misleading and one would hardly recognize the arrows turning at the intersection.

As to the U-turn lane, some drivers do prefer to perform a U-turn here. Technically, the two halves act as two separate roundabouts fused at one point, so it's not hard to see drivers do so. You can still prohibit U-turns using a mod called Lane Changer.

@Tallinu yes that issue about the U-turn lanes is extremely annoying, but usually no one turns there at least. As you said though, they generally just dont use that lane at all which sucks. Hopefully someone will mod this out.

@Sims firehouse I just noticed your updated SPUI with ICON in my menus, well done, slick Icon!

Also, I've been using the mod that allows adjusting road heights by 3m increments instead of 12m, and I think you might find it helpful. Especially when using the smoother slope restrictions. It gives you a lot more control when building complicated ramps and trying to get things "just right".

Just as a note, I don't have any sort of terraforming mod. And I had no trouble placing this on the side of a gradual hill, at least, though I haven't tried steeper areas.

This is definitely a very nice interchange. There's only one minor issue I've noticed, and it's mainly an inconsistency between traffic flow and the screenshots you posted. You show traffic exiting the freeway onto the six-lane roads using all three outgoing lanes, but in fact, the short segment of highway only has two "straight" arrows and the other is a "left turn" arrow, which in this configuration is effectively a U-turn back into the interchange.

All one-way roads allow turns like this, even when built at this kind of extreme sharp angle. It's incredibly annoying and I don't know of any way to change it. It will probably require some kind of mod, unfortunately.

Despite effectively functioning as a two-lane with U-turn, traffic does appear to spread out onto the three lanes of the two-way road to use all turning directions where appropriate. And with no traffic light, this intersection works much better than any other SPUI I've tried or built. Thanks!

Awesome.

The 8-way is a solution I found to avoid the very-short curved segment being distorted upon saving the asset. It turned out it has no traffic lights either; this was more like a coincidence.
