The problem is that I have to introduce the elements first, because think from the test subject's perspective, the subject doesn't know them yet (brain chemicals) and has to learn what they do. Plus, the first puzzles of a test sequence have to be easy.

I think we all know that floydft but if the author said that it would sound kinda stupid "Thinkning with portals and the lasers from the story mode that we all know about" see what I mean :)
