JGR Medium Wooden Coaches

Description
Built between 1910 and 1917 under the Japanese Government Railways (JGR) “Ministry Basic Coach” program, the Medium Wooden Coaches were the first truly standardized passenger cars in Japan. They featured steel underframes with wooden bodies, 2- or 3-bogie layouts, and the classic “Grape No. 1” brown livery. Used nationwide on both regional and long-distance services, they represented the peak of Taishō-era passenger comfort — forming the backbone of early express trains such as Express No. 1 / 2 on the Tōkaidō and Sanyō lines.
