Adaptive Grab

Description
Slugcats prioritize picking up combat-related items while standing or moving, and non-combat items while lying down and stationary.

Quick disclaimer: This mod takes some getting used to, particularly when chain-stabbing enemies while lying down.

The goal of this mod is to add a minimally intrusive, simple to use, vanilla-like method of choosing between multiple items to pick up. A specific focus is reducing how often you die to picking up crap you don't want in close combat situations (mainly fighting scavs as artificer).

As an added bonus, this also fixes a bug where you can only grab creatures when standing near their head (this is particularly annoying on centipedes).

This mod allows you to:
  • Reliably grab bombs and rocks from underneath scavenger corpses.
  • Eat dead enemies without needing to remove all the spears from their body.
  • Pick up a vulture grub pincushion without removing spears from it.
  • Better sort through piles of items in a shelter.

Priority Order
These are the item priorities used depending on your current stance and inputs:

"Combat Stance" (While in a "standing" state, or pressing any movement keys):
  1. Spears (including explosive / shock)
  2. Non-spear weapons (rocks, bombs, spore puffs, beehives, flashbangs, etc)
  3. Non-weapon items (food items, pearls, lanterns, etc.)
  4. Creatures (dead or alive)

"Noncombat Stance" (When not pressing any movement keys while lying down or pipe crawling):
  1. Non-weapon items and Creatures (dead or alive)
  2. Spears (including explosive / shock)
  3. Non-spear weapons (rocks, bombs, spore puffs, beehives, flashbangs, etc)

For items of equal priority, the nearest item in front of the slugcat is picked up. If there are none in front, the nearest item behind the slugcat is picked up.

Recommended Mods
I recommend also checking out the Drop Button (1.10 Fix) mod for optimal item handling efficiency. You will also need to download Improved Input Config: Extended to use the Drop Button mod.

Alternatively to this mod, you may want to check out the Better Grab mod, which adds dedicated keybinds for picking up food and weapons. It's also compatible with this mod if you wanted to run both for whatever reason.

perhaps you could add a check for how close u are to a hostile creature (or maybe a certain threat level? that one remix option makes it into balls so i think its possible) to override ur stance and prioritise weapons? this could help with that spearing lizards issue
