The Refreshed Ground Units mod adds in Distant Worlds 1 troop graphics and some new ones to make the races feel more distinct.

/========== COMPATIBILITY ==========\
In order to force the game to use different ground unit assets for each race, this mod changes the TroopDefinitions*.xml files. This mod is incompatible with other mods that modify those files.

This mod does the same thing as my Refreshed Troop Symbols mod. You can pick one over the other.

XL users: THIS MOD IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH XL. XL ALREADY INCORPORATES THIS MOD CONTENT. YOU DO NOT NEED THIS MOD AND XL.

/========== CONTENTS ==========\
Distant Worlds: Universe (DW1) had some GREAT ground unit art assets for each race. It was super neat to see the Dhayut spider tanks and the Zenox battle suits.

Distant Worlds 2 just uses the same ground unit icons for all races. Meh.

This mod attempts to bring back a lot of the DW1 graphics.

HOWEVER...

Due to the way DW2 handles ground units (white silhouette), many of the old DW1 ground units didn't look good at all. I have replaced many units with new art to try and maximize the distinction--though with graphics that small, it is a challenge.

THIS MOD INCLUDES ALL MINOR RACES, even though they aren't playable. Someday when all the DW2 DLCs are released, we can play as every featured race and their ground units.















/========== HOW TO USE THIS MOD ==========\
  1. Subscribe to this mod here in steam workshop.
  2. Launch DW2.
  3. Within the game, In the Modifications menu, enable the mod.
  4. <<< IMPORTANT >>> You must EXIT and RESTART Distant Worlds 2 before the mod will work.
  5. After re-loading DW2, start a new game and enjoy!

The Distant Worlds 2 Refreshed mod series is my attempt to increase my skills with generative AI applications, 3D modeling and photo-editing programs.

I'm just a dad gamer who enjoys tinkering with his games. I hope these mods add to your enjoyment of DW2!

@マルコ -- Yeah...I get it that they are a very small team (<10 people), but 3+ years after launch and small things like this still are around. The galaxy overlay symbols are still upside down (new game defaults to looking at "galactic north" but all the overlay symbols are aligned with "galactic south"). Also a simple/silly bug. Also waiting for that fix :D

I see... considering also the many bugged achievments still not unlocking in DW1 and the fact they said they would check it in an 11 years old post, I get a lot of "tech support" vibes from this team - meaning they reassure you with good words, but it's all superficial sugar, because then just proceed with the most money effective plan.
Which doesn't necessarily include giving the player the best possible game they can...
Really disappointed.

Anyway, you did a great job, it's a shame they haven't supported you so far :(

@ZumZoom -- This would replace the need for my troop symbols mod. The current game uses the same image for each troop type across all races (one infantry symbol, one armor symbol, etc). So my other mod just "refreshes" those symbols. This mod, however, changes the game files so that each race uses a new graphic. Having both doesn't hurt anything, just load this one last to keep this mod's changes.

@マルコ -- I'm afraid there's nothing I can do about that. I've told the DW2 team about that years ago. They always say "we'll consider changing it in the future". The symbols are coded to all face the same direction. When we use the vanilla symbols (symmetrical) it's not noticeable, but they also only face one way.

Looks great. Thank for all the work you put into this.

I'm a little confused about the old mod (Refreshed Troop Symbols) - does this one work alongside it, or do they do the same thing so I need to choose one?

@Rebelkid -- Thanks, friend! It's one of those head-scratcher things with DW2: they already had this in DW1 :D

Happy to try and keep the old approach going.

I do think it adds a lot of racial distinction.
