Description
The First Chechen War (1994–1996) was a conflict between the Russian Federation and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, which sought independence after the Soviet Union's collapse. Russia launched a military campaign in December 1994 to reassert control, beginning with a devastating assault on Grozny. The battle caused massive destruction and civilian casualties, drawing international condemnation.
