L2A1 — Automatic Rifle / SAR (FAL family)
The L2A1 is the heavy-barrel, fully-automatic automatic rifle (squad automatic / SAR) variant of the FN FAL / Commonwealth “inch-pattern” family — developed to give infantry sections sustained firepower from an FAL-derived platform. Built with a beefed-up barrel, foldable bipod/handguard and larger 30-round magazines, the L2A1 was produced in Commonwealth factories (notably Australia’s Lithgow) and used as a light support weapon by Australian, New Zealand and some other forces. It fills the role between a rifle and a full machine gun: portable like a rifle, but optimized for prolonged automatic fire.

Key features:
– Caliber: 7.62×51mm NATO.
– Heavy/longer barrel and quick-change capability for sustained fire.
– Folding bipod / combined handguard–bipod and heavier construction for stable fire.
– Feed: 30-round FAL magazines (can use 20-round as well).
– Role: Squad automatic weapon / light support weapon (bridges gap between rifle and medium MG).
