MG 42 — The Lightning Machine Gun
The MG 42 is a World War II-era German general-purpose machine gun famous for its blistering rate of fire, rugged simplicity and terrifying bark on the battlefield. Introduced in 1942 to replace earlier designs, the MG 42 could lay down an almost continuous wall of lead with rates of fire often between 1,200–1,500 rounds per minute, making it superb for suppression and defence. Its quick-change barrel system, stamped-steel construction and robust feed mechanism inspired many post-war designs and cemented its place as one of the most influential machine guns in military history.

– Caliber: 7.92×57mm Mauser (original); many post-war derivatives use 7.62×51mm NATO.
– Very high rate of fire: ~1,200–1,500 RPM (selectable in some mounted variants).
– Quick-change barrel for sustained fire.
– Belt-fed, tripod or bipod adaptable.
– Stamped steel construction — cheap to produce and extremely durable.
– Iconic sound and battlefield suppression capability.
