Tenacious Rummaging

Description
About
Tenacious Rummaging adds a fully server-authoritative “rummage/search” gameplay loop to DayZ by letting admins mark world objects and specific pieces of interior furniture as searchable nodes.

Originally posted by Epic trailer voiceover-guy:
In a world where every cupboard tells a story... Every dresser hums with possibility... Every trash pile just waits to be disturbed...

Tenacious Rummaging turns DayZ’s interiors into living treasure hunts where curiosity, patience, and a little nerve pay off. Peer into kitchen cabinets, tug open fridge doors, slide your hand under dusty beds and into nightstand drawers. If it looks rummageable, there’s a good chance it is.

This isn’t “press F for free loot.” Searching takes a moment. Your breath slows. The room feels louder than it should. Maybe you pull out bandages and a can of beans. Maybe your fingers catch on something sharp and you hiss through your teeth. Maybe, just maybe, the noise wakes something mean in the next room, or sets off a cranky old alarm that tells the neighborhood you're there.

Tenacious Rummaging thrives on risk and reward. It’s the tiny triumph of finding batteries after sundown. It’s the clatter that brings trouble when you get greedy. It’s the note left by whoever came before you in form of greasy prints, an empty shelf, and the unmistakable sense you’re seconds late. Success tastes sweeter when the walls feel close and the stakes feel real.

That's what Hollywood would say. Anyway:

What you’ll feel in play
  • Real scavenging moments: cabinets, fridges, dressers, beds, trashpiles, mailboxes. Hands-on searching where it makes sense and where it looks like you should be able to loot.

  • Tension by design: a short rummage window where anything can happen: a clean score, a nicked glove, or the kind of noise that draws unwanted attention.

  • Fair scarcity: sometimes you’re early; sometimes someone else already stripped the place and left you with nothing.

  • Story-rich interiors: houses suddenly become hotspots. Kitchens are worth a second pass, bedrooms will be interesting to enter, and that shoe-rack in the hallway might just have that pair of sneakers you need.

  • Emergent chaos: a lucky haul or generated noise followed by groans in the hallway? a siren you didn’t see coming? smoke where there shouldn’t be any? or even PO-X gas out of nowhere? You'll never feel too sure you're safe when it all becomes a gamble -- Do I search or do I leave it?

This mod can be as big or as small as you want it to be. You can add every prop object and furniture on the map and assign them unique loot tables, or you can only make the trash piles along the road lootable. What you choose to do with this mod and how you want your server to be is 100% in your own hands.

How it works
Players who look at a whitelisted node gets a prompt to search that plays rummaging audio, checks against a cooldowns table, rolls against configurable loot odds, and either spawns weighted loot or fires “failure events" (e.g., zombie aggro, smoke/gas, shock/KO, siren alarm, all customizable per node or category).

Searchable nodes come in three flavors: static (specific object instance at a quantized position), class-wide (every instance of a given class), and interior (fine-grained furniture inside houses).

The mod uses client-side prompt gating and server validation: clients only see the action where a synced node exists, while the server enforces cooldowns, loot rolls, hazards, and events.

Admin tooling is provided in-game via the custom "AdminStone" item, which provides an interactive way to add objects as nodes to the server's node database.

Compatability
The mod has been tested with a fairly large set of other mods, such as DayZ Expansion, BBP, Zen's mods and so on, and so far it looks like it is non-distruptive and just quietly adds into the world next to everything else that's going on. If you find a problem, please let us know!

Features list
  • Three node types: Static, Class-Wide, and Interior (furniture).
  • Custom audio cues
  • Hazard chance when looting
  • Flavor text for each action; configurable in the config, with fallback texts
  • Triggerable event chance when looting (zombies, gas, smoke, shock, knock-out and siren-alarm)
  • Client-side prompt whitelist (prompts only in valid contexts).
  • Admin-item gated in-game authoring actions for all node types.
  • Robust, highly dynamic and detailed config of all the loot- and event-related functions in the mod.
  • Server-authoritative match & spawn with position quantization and radius fallback for statics.
  • Search logger: logs each attempt in either predetermined .log, or additionally in a CSV document with CSV-formatted lines (player, node key, roll/chance, outcome). Toggleable in the config.
  • Central debug helper with consistent prefixes and gating. Toggleable in the config.

All configuration lives under $profile:TenaciousRummaging/ in standard JSON files
  • SearchableNodes.json (searchable nodes database)
  • LootGroups.json (what can drop, with weights and item health/quantity overrides)
  • LootSettings.json (per-category cooldown, hazard, and event settings)
  • Cooldowns.json (persistent global or per-player cooldowns across reboots)

Also..
I got a lot of inspiration from other mods and modauthors on Steam, especially the "Search for Loot" mod by HunterZ, "Garbage Search" by Zedmag, "Proxy Actions" and "Proxy Framework" by Zenarchist, and the "DayZStory Loot Wreck System" mod by JOKER and Uncle T. Thank you for all the work you've done. This mod would not have been possible without the previous work of the DayZ modder community.

@Aleksandr: Configurable text-strings is in the pipeline, so you can put whatever language you want in the config yourself. I hope to have it ready in a few weeks.

Отличная работа! Будет ли перевод для меток поиска на другие языки?

I was talking with my friend that this game needed a search interactiong with stuff like lockers and all that and I just found this. Thank you for such an amazing mod!

Fantastic mod, it works perfectly for our server and gives way more control over formatting and settings.

I would very much like to display the font colour as white.:steamhappy:

Great mod so far. setting it up on our server.

Though it would be nice if the notification was a little easier to read. It's very small writing on big screens, and the blue font colour makes it blend into some environments, making you change view to read it.
Search for Loot notification type does it well, and would be worth implementing.

Other than this.. top marks.

@Hourglass Remains I have not tested it alongside SFL, so I cannot say for sure.

Can this be run along side Search For Loot without issue? Would be looking to fill in the node "gaps" with the admin stone and have event triggers on certain things while keeping what I already have configured with SFL.
