1955 Chevrolet Corvette

With GI's returning home from WWII, a booming market of car sales began. With many vets importing Jaguars', MG's, and Alfa Romeos' many American car companies saw the need to break into the small 2 door 2 passenger sports car market. Although technically not the first to market a 2 door sports car, being beat by the likes of Nash in 1951 (Nash Healey) and even Crosley Motor Cars back in 1949 with the Hotshot. Chevrolet was the first serious attempt at a all around American full size sports car at a reasonable price.

in 1953 the first Corvettes had to be hand built in a make shift factory, molded out of a fiberglass material, the likes of which was still a brand new idea at the time. The engine came from the standard line up of production cars from Chevy, a 'Blue Flame' inline six with triple carburetors, and paired with a automatic transmission. The Corvette was lacking initially in power compared to its rivals in Europe. All first models were 'Polo white' with red interiors, blue painted engines, and black soft tops. and only 300 were made and sold. Several issues were reported with the car at first including lackluster body fitment, water leaks, and even doors opening while being driven, all would eventually be corrected but led to a poor view of the Corvette. 1954 saw somewhat better sales but by 1955 sales dipped again. Its not until 1956 the Corvette would see an updated body style with the removal of the inline six, added manual transmission, power assisted top and power windows with a better radio and overall better quality. By 1957 sales jumped drastically and from then on sales continued to climb.

Although the shaky start, it has become an icon for American culture.
