Description
Role: Capping - Scouting - Ambush | Difficulty: HARD

This is a 'Torpcello' half-cap fleet consisting of the classic 'Torpcello' Ambush/Hunter-Killer build that excels in close quarter combat, with a focus on defending objectives and space patrol.

The recommended doctrine for this fleet is as follow:
  • Early game: Focus on controlling objectives with the five rocket shuttles, while building a mental picture of the opposition's composition and positioning using team intel. Try to conserve as many rocket shuttles as possible. Hide the Torpcello in the backline and avoid detection at all cost.
  • Mid game: Reposition and hide the rocket shuttles, or use them to strike targets of opportunity, such as backline assets and lone beam destroyers. Activate the Torpcello and use it to hunt for unsuspecting frontline assets, especially those that overextended or being held down by friendly frontline assets. Prioritize weakened targets. A rocket shuttle can also be used as bait in a pinch.
  • Late game: Focus late game objectives control using your remaining rocket shuttles, and utilize the Torpcello as either a tanky capper, or use it to dislodge capital ships from objectives with its remaining armament.

Best used as a support element in 5v5 matches.

The best tactics for the Torpcello once it is active is to evade detection until the last minute, even better during feigned retreat to draw enemy capital ships to overextend, then unleash the deadly torpedoes at the unsuspecting enemies (weapons control mode HOLD can be used to great effect here).

Can take out lone Solomon, Axford pair, or Vauxhall trio with ease. However, ally fire support is strongly recommended against denser concentration of enemies. Be economical when expending your torpedoes, as they are a limited resource, and an empty Torpcello cannot respond to threats other than bow tanking.

Note: The Torpcello does not have enough power to run all systems simultaneously. It is important that you manage your power consumption during combat, especially when your point-defense is activated. Set your PDTRT to DEDI on the torpcello at the start of the match to avoid having the illuminator automatically firing on PD prioritized targets and unnecessarily drawing power.

Weaknesses: The Torpcello is vulnerable to cruise missiles, bombers, and beams spams; in addition to just being in the open in general. Keep your position and composition well concealed for best survivability.

The included SGT-315 Letter Opener torpedo is best fired at range 3.6 - 3.8 km, to a maximum of 4.0 km. It has corkscrew terminal maneuver with 3.2G of turn rate to defeat weakened/exposed point defense. Remember to burn through and lock the contact you want to shoot to defeat jamming, as this torpedo is Command (CMD) guided.

Torpedo Performance

Below is the amount of SGT-315 Letter Opener torpedoes it takes to cripple ANS hulls of each class. Please note that it might take more torpedoes to take out ships capable of bow-tanking (Vauxhall light cruisers and larger), or ships that are unusually reinforced with many components and redundancies.

When shooting a small amount of torpedoes at smaller ships (less than the salvo size of 6), care must be taken to ensure that heavy enemy point defense is not present. Otherwise, more torpedoes would be needed to get through to the target without being all shot down.

A mass torpedo attack will perform best when you can catch the enemy ship off-guard on its either sides, top, or bottom. This increases the likelihood of widespread damage to vital systems such as the drive, reactor, magazine, and CIC.

In total, you have 8 full salvos (48 torpedoes).

Based on my other Torpcello build Hidden Blade Squadron.

Sister fleet: Hidden Nailgun Squadron.

Good luck and have fun! Let me know in the comments if you have any suggestions.

Note that it's quite common in competitive play to have one of your ships be "power-cringed" in this way. It's a min/maxing strategy. It's essentially fitting more systems on your ships at the cost of increasing the demand on your ability to micro the ship so you don't run out of power mid-fight.

can you explain this?

When PDTRT is set to AUTO, if you press Z and click on a missile/craft to PD prioritize it, the Floodlight activates and fires at the missile/craft you just clicked. This is because the game considers the illuminator as a dual-purpose turret, so it would be turn on automatically to boost point defense FCR. This does not happen when PDTRT is set to DEDI.

By having PDTRT set to DEDI, we never have to worry about the illuminator firing without our explicit command. We want to micro the illuminator in this build to have enough power in critical moments when you need to launch your full salvo of 6 torpedoes, which is not possible in this build if you have the illuminator on because it saps power from the missile programming buses.

what does the illuminator do on its own?

On its own, the illuminator is there to do 2 things:
- Offensively: To break through jamming and attain target lock, if you're being jammed. Turn it off once you got a lock. So you have power to do other things.
- Defensively: To illuminate your own chaff to defeat SAH seekers.
