The chassis of this tank was developed from that of the T-80. Its turret is newer than that of the T-80 and is equipped with a 152.4 mm smoothbore gun. In September 1990, the experimental vehicle of Project 292 was completed and underwent testing the following year. The test results indicated that the tank's cannon and other components exhibited high stability and reliability. However, due to a lack of funding, the Soviet Union halted further development and improvements of this tank.
