Grand Chess

Description
Christian Freeling's "Grand Chess" variant.

The rules are the same as in regular chess with the addition of two new pieces and a stipulation on an existing rule.

Next to the king there is a knight with a crown similar to that of a rook, that piece is called a Marshall. It has the moves of a knight and rook combined.

Next to the Marshall is the Cardinal, a piece that appears as a knight with a bishop's crown. It has the moves of a knight and bishop combined.

The stipulation is to the promotion rule, in regular chess a pawn must promote to any piece upon reaching the 8th rank.
In grand chess a pawn may choose promote to any piece that has been lost upon reaching the 8th rank. It has the same choice again upon reaching the 9th rank. It may not advance to the tenth rank if there has been no piece lost, thusly no piece for it to replace. Despite not being able to advance to the tenth rank, the pawn still gives check on the tenth rank as though it could move.

Nice models for a variant that seems easy to learn.
