Vehicle NAME

History
Developed as a successor to the MT-25 Medium Tank, which itself had replaced/was added to the Sherman series, the M147 “Crossroad”
Development was kept tight and the tank was finalized in late 1947, production started in early 1948 and the first vehicles were put on cargo ships only a few months later.

The M147’s most notable feature was its 92mm M41 cannon, a lighter derivative of the heavy guns mounted on tanks like the Douglas. The M41 could fire solid AP rounds, APHE (armor-piercing high-explosive) shells, and high-explosive shells for infantry suppression and light fortification reduction. Though it lacked the raw penetration power of newer anti-tank weapons being developed by the early 1950s, the M41 remained effective, especially against Japanese and Soviet medium armour.
The Crossroad was also the last U.S. medium tank to feature a hull-mounted machine gun, requiring a fifth crew member who also acted as assistant driver. The turret was also equipped with a coaxial .50 caliber machine gun—a rarity among American tanks of the period, giving the M147 an unusually strong anti-infantry capabilities compared to its contemporaries. Many field commanders came to appreciate this trait during clearing operations in the dense urban and forested zones of the Japanese mainland.
For stabilization, the tank used an updated rheostat-controlled gyrostabilizer, inherited from both the MT-25 and earlier Sherman models. While technically advanced for its time, it was maintenance-intensive and highly sensitive to wear. In practice, most crews kept the stabilizer disengaged during manoeuvres, activating it only when absolutely necessary or during deliberate firing from semi-static positions.
The Crossroad was powered by a moderate-performance gasoline engine that gave it a top speed of 45 km/h on roads. However, its reliability was inconsistent, and overheating issues were a frequent complaint. Especially during extended operations in Japan’s mountainous, rocky, and humid terrain.

By the time of its deployment in late 1949, the Crossroad’s combat presence was largely confined to the final year of fighting on the Japanese mainland, where it served in combined-arms assaults and perimeter defence roles. Although it saw relatively limited combat, it proved effective in both anti-tank and infantry support tasks when properly supported and maintained.
Following Japan’s Takeover in 1950, the M147 saw scattered deployment during the early phases of the Successor Wars, but by then it was already being overshadowed by newer designs and better armoured, more reliable tanks. Consequently, the Crossroad was largely relegated to rear-area duties, training formations, and foreign military aid programs.

In particular a section of these tanks was gifted to the Canadian Tank regiments as training aids and later on range targets.
While in total, approximately 2,500 Crossroads were built, only around 200 were ever deployed in active U.S. combat formations. The rest acted as training aids, were stockpiled in depots, or put in foreign service.

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
