The GATX Rail Locomotive Group is part of GATX Corporation, a company founded in 1898 as Atlantic Seaboard Dispatch that became General American Transportation Corporation before changing its name to GATX in 1975. GATX acquired its locomotive business and began leasing locomotives as part of its diversification and expansion, building on its core railcar leasing services. The GATX Rail Locomotive Group now leases and sells locomotives to railroads and industries across North America.
Founding and Early History

• 1898: Max Epstein founded the Atlantic Seaboard Dispatch in Chicago, which would later become GATX Corporation, with the initial goal of leasing railcars to businesses.
• Early 20th Century: The company expanded its operations, changing its name to General American Tank Car Corp. in 1916 and then to General American Transportation Corp.
• Post-War: GATX began diversifying its leasing activities into other equipment, including airplanes and locomotives.

Growth in the Locomotive Business

• 2000: The company restructured into a unit of GATX Corporation, becoming GATX Rail Corporation.
• Recent Decades: GATX acquired a significant North American locomotive fleet and expanded its leasing and mechanical services offerings for these assets. [4, 5]
• Recent Acquisitions: In August 2024, GATX acquired 156 locomotives from Progress Rail Services, increasing its total locomotive fleet to over 650 units.

Present Day

• Core Business: The GATX Rail Locomotive Group provides services such as buying, selling, leasing, and trading locomotives to a variety of railroads and industries.
• Comprehensive Offerings: GATX offers a mix of leasing and mechanical services, supporting its large locomotive fleet in North America.
