John Butcher was once the designated marksman of the Chimurenga army.
Agile, enduring, and trained to move unseen, he prided himself on being the kind of man who always got the job done—or at least that’s what he claimed.

One night, while on guard duty with his brother Arnold Butcher, the two were ordered to hold a checkpoint near the village of Pantagruel, stopping anyone not recognized by their militia. But that night, the unexpected came not from enemy soldiers but from a pack of coyotes emerging out of the western wastes of Grand Chien.

Outnumbered and poorly positioned—despite carrying a precision rifle and a heavy-caliber revolver—the brothers abandoned their post and fled into a nearby underground bunker. Inside, they were greeted by a grim sight: piles of Legion corpses, half-rotted and heaped like firewood. What unsettled them most was the presence of discarded uniforms from conventional armies stacked atop the bodies, hinting at something far stranger than a simple skirmish.

Neither of them wanted to remain long in that stinking tomb, especially not John, whose claustrophobia soon overwhelmed him. His chest tightened, tears streamed from his eyes, his skin clammy as waves of vertigo set in. Arnold was forced to hoist his brother onto his shoulders and climb back up toward the surface.

No sooner had they escaped the bunker than five coyotes came charging at them. Still trembling from his panic, John snapped back into focus, chambered the last of his explosive-tipped rounds, and fired at a rusted transformer near the bunker’s entrance. The thunderous metallic blast scattered the pack instantly. The brothers didn’t dare return to town—they headed south, into the wild.

A lot happened in the weeks that followed.

When John resurfaced, he was barely recognizable. He had not returned to his comrades. Instead, he had turned rogue—stealing, looting, doing whatever it took to survive. His downward spiral might have continued indefinitely if not for Miky, an old ally who offered him a hand. Covered in shame, John confessed troubles far deeper than hunger or fear, and the two reached a silent understanding.

With Miky’s words of support, John found his resolve again. He swore he would one day hold accountable the officers who had abandoned him and Arnold—left them, just two men, to guard a crossroads in the middle of a warzone. A checkpoint where drugs and weapons flowed freely under cover of night, within striking distance of enemy bases, and defended by nothing more than two brothers with rifles.

Time passed.

No one truly knows what John Butcher endured during those lost months. What is certain is that today, he sells his services through A.I.M. – the Association of International Mercenaries. Still clad in the tattered gear of the rebel communists, John is never alone: Arnold is always by his side, not just as a brother but as his spotter. While John takes aim and pulls the trigger, Arnold is his eyes and voice—scouting targets, judging distance, and guiding every shot to ensure nothing escapes their deadly partnership. Together, they are a formidable pair: the sniper and his watchful guide.
