OEBB Rh 2062

Description
The ÖBB Class 2062 was a diesel-hydraulic locomotive of the Austrian Federal Railways, designed primarily for shunting and light freight operations. Built between 1958 and 1966, a total of 65 units were produced by Simmering-Graz-Pauker (SGP). A distinctive feature was its compact design and B wheel arrangement, ideal for tight curves and confined spaces in rail yards and industrial sidings.

Initially deployed across Austria, the Class 2062 quickly became a backbone of local shunting operations, especially in smaller stations and depots. Its robust construction and reliable 220 kW engine made it well-suited for industrial rail services and maneuvering freight cars in sidings.

As newer shunting locomotives like the Class 1063 and Class 2070 were introduced, the 2062 was gradually phased out from major terminals but remained in use on branch lines and in private industry. Some units were even leased or sold to industrial operators after being retired from ÖBB service.

In the final years before their withdrawal, Class 2062 locomotives were primarily active in regions like Lower Austria, Carinthia, and Styria. The last examples were retired from ÖBB service in the 2000s.

Several locomotives have been preserved and can now be seen in railway museums or operated by heritage railways, representing a key era in Austrian diesel traction history.
