Tokyu 9000 Series / 東急9000系

The 9000 Series (9000系) is a commuter EMU operated by Tokyu Railways since 1986.

Introduced as Tokyu Railways' first mass produced VVVF vehicle, the 9000 series was developed as the company's new standard commuter vehicle. The type was designed to be compatible with the then under construction Tokyo Metro Namboku Line and Toei Mita Line, would would have through service with Tokyu's Meguro Line. From 1986-1991, 17 8-car sets were produced for Toyoko Line, and a single 5-car set for Oimachi Line, for a total of 117 cars. The planned use of the 9000 series for subway through services would never be realized however, as the two subway lines decided to adopt platform screen doors late in the construction time frame. Therefore, Tokyu introduced the 3000 series for through running instead, but the 9000 series did run on the Minatomirai Line after it opened in 2004. Deployment on the Toyoko Line would end in 2013, just prior to the opening of Tokyo Metro's Fukutoshin Line, which started through service with the Seibu Ikebukuro and Tobu Tojo lines. Similar to the previous case, Tokyu found that converting the 9000 series for subway operations would be too costly, and instead chose to reallocate the entire fleet to the Oimachi Line. Currently, 11 sets are operational as Oimachi Line local trains, with the 8 car sets shortened to 5 cars when they were transferred. This type is currently being replaced by the 6020 series, which is due to be complete in FY2027. Some of the retired sets will be sold to Seibu and converted to 4 cars trains for use on the Tamagawa Line, Tamako Line, Chichibu Line and Sayama Line.
