To summarize, Aspyr has promised that they will make sure Persistent Worlds and multiplayer are supported, but their main goal at launch is to get Single Player working. They ran into unexpected issues with multiplayer but hit the due date before they could sort it out. There will be upcoming patches to improve multiplayer support.

Yes! NWN2:EE (on PC) has the direct connect option under multiplayer. By choosing this and entering a server's IP address, it allows you to connect and start the downloading of the server files. The mouse and gamepad issues have been fixed with NWSync. The new servers Elben Aator and Mazariim still require that you download their files without NWSync via Steam and Discord respectively.

Players that are using a keyboard & mouse will crash at spell selection during character creation on servers that are not using the new Keyboard & Mouse UI released with NWN2EE. This can be bypassed either by using a Gamepad (which forces the Gamepad UI) or selecting a Class Package at character creation. The latter would mean giving up customization with feats, spells, schools, etc. If your character will be multi-classing with a non spell-casting class (Fighter/Wizard), you can take your first level as a non-spell caster to avoid crashing during character generation. Clerics & Druids do not select spells, so they will not crash. I at first thought this would also effect level ups, but I found that NWN2EE will use the new UI regardless once you get past character creation.
A. Gamepad
For most (but not all) of the old servers I have checked so far, if you choose "Create a Character" with a gamepad, the screen will go dark but it will not load the Gamepad UI. (You can get back by moving your mouse to load the Keyboard & Mouse UI then choose cancel.) Instead, first choose "Select a Character" (even if you don't have a character on the server yet), cancel back to the NWSync page, then choose "Create a Character." You will then be able to continue.
B. Character Description
You are currently unable to alter your character's description unless you are joining an old PW that is using the old UI while using a keyboard & mouse. Then you are able to alter the character's description once you get to the final screen provided your first class level is not a spell-caster save Druid & Cleric. That said, this is largely a non-issue. Most role-play servers (the only ones where character descriptions really matter) usually add some means to alter your description in game or use the Kemo Biography system.
C. Forcing a Crash
It is possible to force a crash if you take certain actions during character creation on the final screen. During voice selection with a gamepad, if you press the confirm button to bring up the full list, then rapidly scroll down, the game will crash if you don't pause. This can only occur if the server has added an abundant amount of extra voice options. The other action is deleting the pre-generated character description by placing the cursor at the end of the last paragraph then holding backspace to delete one character at a time rapidly rather than pressing the "Clear" button.
A. Fully Functional (minus Gamepad)
DMFI Bar, Charlie's Appearance Changer, Alternate Quest Journal System, MoA's Crafting System, Kemo Animations on Furniture, and similar "full/one page" custom menus/add-ons will not load on the Gamepad UI. They will still appear and function if you use a Keyboard & Mouse. These additions need to be added into the Gamepad UI files. All of the ones listed here will remain open if you switch from a keyboard & mouse to a gamepad, but I have encountered others that will auto-close when you switch. This isn't a problem so long as they can be reopened, but it is an issue in the case of ones like Realms of Trinity's Power Mode option which was never designed to be closed and can't be reopened.

B. Partially Functional
PC Tools, Kemo Animations Bar, and similar custom UI elements that have "drop-down" sub-menus. The Keyboard & Mouse UI is currently unable to load sub-menus. For example, PC Tools will appear and all the buttons on the main menu (Save Character, Check Time, Safe Location, etc.) will respond to mouse clicks and function. However, the sub-menu windows (Emotes & Miscellaneous) will not appear when you click on them. The + will change to a -, but no menu will appear beneath. The same goes for the Kemo Animations toolbar where 1, 2, Tools and ? will respond but you can't load the animation sub-menus (Sit, Stand, Crouch, etc). United colors will work if you're using a keyboard & mouse during character generation. If you're using a gamepad, you will only be able to see the first two lines of options: all the shades of white to black, 1 yellow, and 1 red.

If it was available offline in any of the Campaigns, it will work online.
New Classes, Prestige Classes, Skills, Feats, Races, Sub Races, Backgrounds, etc. seem to be working perfectly fine. Custom systems that use the vanilla dialogue will also work with both the Keyboard & Mouse UI as well as the Gamepad UI. This includes the alternate appearance changer that uses vanilla dialogue to change armor variation, appearances, parts, colors, etc.

While I still have several more of the old persistent worlds to check out, my experience so far has been overwhelmingly positive save the few caveats already mentioned. I did run into some crashing and logging issues with A Land Far Away, but they have since been resolved thanks to the admin's tinkering. The only persistent world that is mostly unplayable is Molior Runescape due to the many custom changes and systems added by the server's development team to emulate the Runescape experience.

Here is my advice to EE players wanting to fully enjoy the older Persistent Worlds:
- Keep your mouse handy to navigate the custom UI systems until they have been added into the Gamepad UI by the server's staff. Alternatively, you can hold down your guide chord button and use the right analog stick to control the mouse. LB & RB work as left and right mouse clicks respectively.
- If you're playing a spell caster and not a Druid or Cleric, connect any type of gamepad (or use a virtual gamepad) for character creation to avoid crashing. Once you're past character creation, you can level up using a keyboard & mouse without crashing.
