The Hagia Irene, a historic structure in Istanbul, Turkey, has a rich past beginning with its original construction in the 4th century by Emperor Constantine I. Following damage, it was completely rebuilt in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian I. A key point of interest is that Hagia Irene is one of the rare Byzantine churches that was never converted into a mosque, which is why it retains so much of its original Byzantine architecture. The church was also a pivotal site during the Iconoclasm period, serving as a hub for the movement that opposed religious icons. Its architectural hallmarks include a striking central dome, thick walls, and detailed brick and stonework, all emblematic of the Byzantine style.
