Kogelvis - Missile artilley submarine

This unit was built in and for a highly modded and personalised Oldcampaign install - it will need extensive reworking to function properly in current. You can find all the neccesary mods used in the following collection: Carolus mod projects

Build date: July 2025

The Kogelvis submarine is a small and compact battlefield support artillery unit armed with two large ballistic missiles. It is part of my small RTS-like specialist unit lineup. It fills a support niche, and some sacrifices in efficiency have been made to make this unit feel more thematic.

Its main design criteria were a limited cost and size while retaining the ability to put some big warheads on foreheads. It is not a 'sneaky' submarine build, nor is it well armoured, nor is it equipped with proper decoys or even a potent suite of sensors. For all these capabilities it relies on the presence and abilities of allied units in the same battle.

Due to their small volume size and low cost -ca. 45k RP/hull- it is possible to spawn a few into any larger fleet battle. They will sit in the fringes, firing their large missiles at standoff range while the enemy AI focusses on larger, closer or more obvious targets. It is crucial to provide some form of (hardkill) torpedo defense in the fleet to screen them.

Their main and only weapon is two 18-part large ballistic missiles. Due to the force of their ejection and guidance/one turn activation delay these missile soar up to a great height before slowly arcing down again. This gives them a top attack aspect, which is devastating in combination with the altitude/proximity fused frag warheads.

Note that to my knowledge, the altitude/proximity fuse component for missiles is not a feature anymore in current FtD.

If anyone who subscribes to this unit for use in current decides to retrofit it for full functionality in current they are free to upload that updated version of the vessel to the FtD workshop, so long as they give credit and link here in their description.
