Colt 601 — The Birth of the Black Rifle
The Colt 601 is the original production model of what would become the legendary M16 rifle. Introduced in the early 1960s and chambered in 5.56×45mm, it was the first widely issued American rifle to use lightweight materials and a direct impingement gas system. With its green fiberglass furniture, slick-sided upper, and no forward assist, the 601 represents the beginning of a revolution in infantry weapons — sleek, futuristic, and far ahead of its time.
