Abarth SpA is a company in Turin,Italy,whose main activity is the production of sports cars based on Fiat.Today,100% of the company belongs to Fiat Group Automobiles.

In 1949,the famous racing driver and designer Carlo Alberto Abarth opened a factory for the production of automobile mufflers and exhaust systems under the brand name "Abarth & C".In the early 1950s,the company began producing the first small-scale sports cars,the chassis donors were mainly Fiat cars,the bodies were ordered from studios specializing in automobile design-Bertone,Zagato,Ghia.

In 1956, a "charged" version of the Fiat 600 was released,with a forced engine of 750 cm3,the demand for the car exceeded the supply so much that the Abarth company decided to supply customers with kits of parts for self-installation. Also, many records were set on this car,including two world records in the 24 and 72 hour race,the latter record was set on October 31,1966 by the Austrian Johannes Ortner,he drove 400 meters in 13.035 seconds.

In 1961, Fiat and Abarth entered into an agreement under which Fiat supplied Abarth with individual mechanisms that it could subsequently upgrade at its own discretion. The list of modifications included braking systems, cooling systems, carburetors and an exhaust system. The result of this cooperation was the Abarth 850TC, built on the chassis of the Fiat 600, the "civilian" version of which had a power of 57 hp, and a maximum speed of 135 km/h. A racing version was also produced with an even more powerful engine with a power of 93 hp and a maximum speed of 190 km/h.

In 1967, Carlo Abarth decided to take part in the fight for the Constructors' Cup among sports prototype cars . For this purpose, he built a new twelve-cylinder engine, with a volume of six liters and a power of 600 hp at 6800 rpm. But the decision of the International Automobile Federation to reduce the standard engine displacement to three liters put an end to this project and the company had no choice but to refuse to participate in the competition.

n 1971, the last car created under the direction of Carlo Abarth was released, a rally modification of the Autobianchi A112 called the A112 Abarth . In the same year, Fiat bought Abarth, after working for the company for a short time as a hired director, Carlo Abarth left his post, his place was taken by the head of the sports department of Fiat, Enzo Osella . The company's last racing car was the 325-horsepower Lancia 037 Abarth, which won the brand classification in 1983.

In 2007, Fiat decided to revive the Abarth brand as a separate brand and released the Abarth Grande Punto , and a little later, in 2008, the new Abarth 500 built on the basis of the Fiat Nuova 500.
