Description
gm_indoorspaces is a fairly large exploration-focused map featuring a host of interconnected interiors with lots of interactivity!

READ ME BEFORE RUNNING!
If you are unable to load the map, try switching to the 64-bit branch of gmod. If the map crashes while loading with any strange or uncommon error (like navmesh is corrupt), switching to the beta branch will most likely help! Trying to figure out gmod loading errors is a special hell lmao
There is a running random soundtrack to this map, the map begins with one of the tracks playing so you can adjust the volume in the settings menu to your liking. All music is made by me (except for one secret easter egg) and is safe for recordings or streams, I've never put my music in a content match database and it'll be a cold day in hell when I do.
The size of the map is due to the packed files that I've included for most people's convenience. If enough people are having some concerns about download size, I may make a version that has nothing packed except my handful of assets .
When in story mode and reading a page, I included a failsafe mostly for those in VR that unlocks your view if you move in any direction. Just dance around a bit and you'll put the page back down!
I've added some functionality to the theater, now by installing the Cinema mod you can use the left theater's screen to watch youtube and more! See the discussion pages below for instructions on getting this functionality working!
If you're stuck in story mode, scroll to the very bottom for the spoiler zone! There's essentially a written page-by-page guide down there, broken up so you don't see more than you need or want to.

Huge credits go to ChromeAngel from the Librarian discord for the amazing 35mm film projector model, their work is impeccable and signficantly better than my piss-poor brushwork model. Another huge shout-out to both the Librarian as well as Logan from Earth for their time and effort in exploring the map and including them in some exploration videos, it's always greatly appreciated. Also shout-outs to Mr. Milo (gm_memoryencyclopedia and brutalist desolation) and Stopmotiony6 (gm_engarde) for being absolute stand-up lads, just the best.

gm_indoorspaces began as an exercise in trying to make a map that didn't heavily abuse seamless teleportation as much so that people can have fun with navmesh-dependent stuff. That and I wanted to practice the scaling for interior areas, I haven't been very good at that up to this point. Slowly it also became a test of map logic and a little bit of lip-syncing, and as per usual spiraled out of control into a much larger project than I was expecting. This is a dense map, with the option to enable story elements or simply explore freely.

This map also was made with exploration in mind, every door in the map is able to be opened in one way or another. If a door is locked, you may be approaching it from the wrong side or may need to progress further in the story (if you're in story mode)

Quick feature rundown (appropriate spoilers will be marked):
  • Fully packed and ready to play!
  • Heavily interconnected map with lots of paths and areas to find
  • Ambient mood music system that alters the soundtrack according to a "mood score"
  • Voiced "npc" (make sure to press USE on him to make him follow you!)
  • Fully AI-ready with navmesh baked in
  • Lots of comfy
  • Lots of creepy
  • No startling jumpscares but some tense moments
  • Random events and sequences (try entering areas more than once!)
  • Adventure mode! Start the map with all story-locked doors unlocked and story sequences disabled. Good for simple exploration or AI chases lmao
  • Story mode! Start the map with several areas gated by progress through the story. Find lost pages from the previous inhabitant to find a way out!
  • Really there's quite a few rooms here not gonna lie
  • Tons of music tracks to listen to!
  • Some light switches work! (I got lazy lmao)
  • A whoooooole load of secrets to find
  • Fun but badly designed posters for my favorite maps (and my own lol)
  • Bizarre shapes underground
  • A ritual
  • Dance floor with four tunes!
  • Photography gallery of course

Finally, thank you all very much for trying out my maps! I'm still learning quite a bit, but this was a very fun one to put together. I'll work on putting together a video going through the map at some point for people that get stuck, possibly also a written guide! Big ups to library man, the gmod vr vids are inspiring as always. And thank you to you for playing!

If you have any difficulties with finding where to go next in story mode, I've made a video here that takes your through the story line in VR

ULTRA SECRET ZONE
If you're stuck in the story mode, don't worry! I've got a little guide here to tell you where to go after getting each page. REMEMBER! You need to press USE/E on each page to activate certain triggers that advance the story!!!

Page 1
The first page consists of a typewriter test and instructions on how to find the writer's new home away from home. You can find it by following the sound of the piano up the red stairs.

Page 2
The second page is found part-way through following the instructions on the first page. It can be found on a desk next to a green desk lamp in an otherwise unlit and unfinished room.

Page 3/4
These are both found in a bedroom at the end of a long hallway, the only door available. They're on a desk with another lamp and a typewriter. Make sure to read both!

Page 5
Exit the bedroom and notice that a door has appeared to your right. Go through the door, the page is on a desk.

Page 6
Return the way you went to get to page 3 & 4 and notice that an elevator shaft has appeared in the unfinished halls. Go down the ladder and exit the second door on the left, it will lead through a hedge maze to a hotel parking lot. The sixth page is on a small table inside the hotel itself.

Page 7
Follow the exit signs through the curving halls, ignore the door opening on its own, and go through the door to the right. The page is on a large desk with another lamp.

Page 8
The previous page mentions a second floor to the hotel, return to the lobby and note that there's an elevator hall now next to the desk. Enter the lift and wait, then follow the blue hallway. Take the door on the left, then door 3, then enter the house. The page is on the dining room table.

Page 9
The previous page details a spot near the unfinished apartments, head back to the area where you found page 2. The adjoining space with all the interior windows is where you want. You want to find a huge completely dark staircase, this page will be at the top.

Page 10
The final page, can be found in the maze next to the pulsing glowing triangle.

The Ritual
There are three. Bring them to the center. When it goes orange, JUMP.

This was a beautiful map, reminded me so much of House of Leaves, and awesome photos man, I myself am using a Pentax 35mm film camera and a Canon EOS R10 DSLR, I too love taking photos mainly of buildings. This was such a treat, awesome work!:steamhappy:

@bomjJack I appreciate it! Unfortunately I'm only any good at english and that's being generous lmao. My next map is going to be a big open nighttime city kinda like afterhours, even has quite a few photo-to-hammer recreations :D
This is a great map, as it's clear that a lot of work, triggers, meticulous work, and the author's love for creativity went into it. It's literally art in map form. It's just a shame I'm so slow.
I see that there's an artistic message here, wonderful music, and even some narrative, but I found the map rather difficult to understand and explore, plus the rooms around it were rather deserted and unremarkable. After an hour (get it? :D) of walking and reading pages, I didn't understand where I needed to go or what to do next.

On gm_afterhours, I could use Google Translate on the photo descriptions, and knowledge of English wasn't generally required to enjoy it, and I really enjoyed the map overall because of the feeling of a night walk. Maybe I'm whining, yes, but that's how I felt

Genuinely an extraordinarily well made map, clearly a lot of effort went into making this. 10/10.
