[UPDATED] Research & Serums

In this guide I will show you everything to know about the Research system.
May contain spoilers (for new enemies for example).

Introduction
The system was added to the game in "The Research Update" (2025 April 16).

Research can be used to analyze bodyparts. By fully analyzing a creature we unlock a Serum Recipe and unlock a Passive Trait.
Serums are used to alter your body and do things you couldn't before.
Passive Traits gives us a permanent upgrade.

Research
To make a serum, you need to analyze a specimen's body first.
Use your newly earned Bonesaw's charged attack to cut up a dead body into it's parts.
Then you need to carry each piece back to your lab (the first invetory upgrade is recommended).


Once there put each part into the pike located on the research table. Then interact with the magnifying glass to analyze it. Every discovery is documented into your Journal.


During research you will learn wich ingredients are needed for a serum. You can find the list in the Journal's 'Pathology' page.
Making a serum
For each serum you'll need 3 ingredients.
You can find them almost everywhere, look for big jars with something weird in them.
Each have unique name and a label on the jar.
(ex.: Engorged Heart - Heart label)
The ones named 'Jar of Viscous Fluid' are empty and only useful for creating distractions.

Once you have the right jars go back to the lab, it's time to cook.
Put the jars on the stand above the vessel with the green liquid inside.
Make sure they are in the right order.

You also need a bodypart of the correct specimen (ex.: the crowman serum will need a crowman bodypart). Put it on the pike then press the button on the middle of the table.

If you did everything correct you will get 1 or more serum(s). Each recipe gives different amounts.
If you fail any step, you'll get a 'Failed Serum' with no effect.

Goatman - Capra Serum
A serum made from the Bulking Goatman. One can be found in the Tavern and one more during the Fishery revisit.

Bodyparts needed - 9 Parts
Head, Torso, Pelvis, left & right Arm, left & right Leg, both Horns

Ingredients: Name - [LABEL]
  • 1. Crystal Claw - [CRAB]
  • 2. Canister of Tongues - [TONGUE]
  • 3. Engorged Heart - [HEART]
Doses: 1 Serum

Serum effect:
Turns the Doctor into a bulking monster. Increases your size, strength and physical defense. You can attack with your huge claws and throw things with greater strength. Lasts 45 seconds.

Passive Trait:
Increased physical and ballistic defense.

Batbarber - Vesper Serum
A serum made from the sneaky little Batbarbers. They can be found all around in the Market.

Bodyparts needed - 6 Parts
Head, Torso, left & right Arm, right Hand, left & right Leg
You don't need the Tail and it can't be used for crafting serum.

Ingredients: Name - [LABEL]
  • 1. Rattail Vessel - [RATTAIL]
  • 2. Collected Ears - [EARS]
  • 3. Hypnotic Toad - [FROGS]
Doses: 2 Serum

Serum effect:
Turns the Doctor into an agile creature. Increases the size of your jumps, and fall damage reduction. So you can reach places you couldn't before. You can also attack with your claws. Other Batbarbers won't attack you. Lasts 45 seconds.

Passive Trait:
Increased jump height and reduced fall damage.

Crowman - Corvus Serum
A serum made from a creepy Crowman. Most of them can be found in the Underport's Hive.

Bodyparts needed - 7 Parts
Head, Torso, Pelvis, left Arm, upper right Arm, right Hand, left Leg, right Foot
The crowman's hat ain't needed and unfortunately cannot be worn.

Ingredients: Name - [LABEL]
  • 1. Gulper Gullet - [MOUTH]
  • 2. Toothed Gel - [TEETH]
  • 3. Portion of Spine - [SPINE]
Doses: 2 Serum

Effect:
Turns the Doctor into a vile creature. Increases your crouch and movement speed. Other crowman will not attack you. You can deal damage with you claws. Attacking flesh regenerates your health.
Lasts 45 seconds.

Passive Trait:
Increased holstered run speed.

Huntsman - ♥♥♥♥ Venari Serum
A Serum made from a dumb mighty Huntsman. They can be found almost everywhere.

Bodyparts needed - 7 Parts
Head, Torso, Pelvis, left & right Arm, left & right leg

Ingredients: Name - [LABEL]
  • 1. Oculary Sample - [EYES]
  • 2. Palm Reliquary - [HANDS]
  • 3. Worm Cluster - [WORMS]
Doses: 3 Serum

Serum effect:
Gives you enhanced vision allowing you to see lifeforms through solid walls. Other Huntsman won't attack you. Lasts 45 seconds.

Passive Trait:
Increased physical and ballistic headshot damage against every huntsman.
(Normal huntsman: 2 shot with revolver, 1 shot with Harpoon Gun on Blood Moon difficulty)

Summary
There is total of 4 Serums in the game so far.

The Research Update Part 2 v0.1.126 added Huntsman Serum
The update also added labels to jars.
