US Loc | EMD SD70

The EMD SD70 series of diesel-electric locomotives produced by Electro-Motive Diesel starting 1992 and continuing to the present (2025 as of this mod's entry).

Primarily for hualing freight in the North American market, there exists both passenger variants equiped with head-endp power (HEP) and some internation units include broad guage variants in Brazil and Mongolia.

Additionally units have been resold and rebuilt, upgrading primary movers and at time adding HEP. This mod will expand to include both passenger and freight variants used in the US market. Other locations would be in different mods.

SD70MAC is a 6 axle locomotive using 3 AC traction motors. Production began in 1993. The early models had 4000 HP prime moves while the later models had 4300 HP prime movers and flared radiator events. The Alaska Railroad bought a variant with HEP in 1993 and liked them so much that they ordered 16 more in 1997. These later models included the increased HP and flared vents. The SD70MAC is no longer in production as it did not meet EPA regulations. In total just over 1100 units were produced.

The SD70MACH is a rebuild of 15 SD70MACs by Progress Rail for Metra (with an option for 27 more). These units are outfitted with HEP, at expense of traction inverters. These units generate less noise than compariable SD70s and meet EPA Tier 3 emissions standards. The first 15 provided by Progress Rail are former Kansas City Southern and Transportación Ferroviaria Mexicana units.
